Argentina’s preparations for the Rugby Championship took a step backwards after losing 25-21 to Stade Français at Velez Sarsfield Stadium in Buenos Aires on Saturday.

Watched on by a 25,000-strong home crowd, the hosts led the Top 14 side 16-12 at half-time but lost their way after the break.

“This is an incredible victory,” said Stade Français captain Sergio Parisse.

“We knew this game would be very difficult.

“I do not think we’ve seen a great rugby match tonight because there was not a lot of pace, but most important is that we begin our tour well.”

    A step backwards? Argentina had the game in the bag midway through the second half and Phelan changed many players. It proved fatal as the replacements failed to gel together and Stade Français was able to score the match winner with its only try of the match. Agulla scored a late try but it was disallowed as Amarosino alledgly set a foot in touch
