At a media briefing at 12.30 in Durban today, Heyneke Meyer confirmed that Jean de Villiers will lead the Springboks against England in the upcoming series.

Ending weeks of speculation, Heyneke Meyer today announced they Jean de Villiers will become the 54th Captain to lead the Springboks, putting to end the rumours and speculations as to who would lead the side against the English side over the next few weeks. It had been rumoured that it was a two horse race between Pierre Spies (Bulls captain) and Jean de Villiers (Stormers captain), with Adriaan Strauss (Cheetahs) as a rank outsider because of the Hooker birth likely to be filled by Bismarck du Plessis.

He was schooled at Paarl Gymnasium, before making his debut for Western Province 2001. That same year he played in the South African Sevens side at the World Sevens Series as well as the Commonwealth Games in 2002.

His first appearance in a Springbok jersey was in 2002, France v South Africa at Marseille, Nov 9, after having been part of the Junior Springboks side that  won the IRB U21 World Championships. He played for Munster during the 2009/2010 season.

Jean de Villiers captained the Springboks against the World XV at Ellis Park on June 11, 2006.

in 2008, he was named both the SA Rugby Player of the Year and Players’ Player of the Year.

In 2007 he was part of Jake Whites winning World Squad, but only played in the first match where he tore a bicep which kept him out of the rest of the tournament. He has also represented the Barbarians.

His career which spans 72 tests, has seen him start 68 times, come on as sub 4 times. Score 95 points (19 tries), with a win ratio of 64%

Good luck Jean, and lets see you lead the side to victory.

I feel for HM. He has chosen a Bulls laden squad, and no-one,not even the Bulls are happy about this. JDV is the team captain for this series. Good choice, as he knows how to win. Good luck JDV on your appointment. Make us proud.

    Congratulations to Jean de Villiers.
I am sure the poor bloke would have loved more of his own personnel in his team.

De Villiers said he was humbled by the trust that was placed in him by Meyer and the Springbok management.

“My heart was in my throat when Heyneke told me about his decision on Sunday evening,” said De Villiers.

“This is an honour that is not bestowed upon many people and I really hope I can do my country proud. I do realise there is massive responsibility that comes with this position. The real, hard work only starts now.”

The Springbok captaincy will be reviewed before the start of the Castle Rugby Championship

    @ Puma:
    English…. 🙄

Finally HM has made a decent decision – Well done JdeV, South Africa are behind you all the way – Go Bokke!

Well done Jean, right man for the job given the current injuries. Hope he can stay fit for the entire test series.

Twee dinge was buite hul beheer:

    1. 6 topspelers verloor

Sies man

Well done Jean, congratulations and we are all behind you all the way.
I am also personally happy with the choice…the team members respect him he is a proven leader and has a ton of experience. Avery short time to get ready, but a good man at the helm!!
