7 Responses to Super Rugby: Player Statistics as at the end of Week 14

The Last Table, MOST MISSED TACKLES, is indeed an interesting one… just look at the number of scrumhalves in the top 20, 5 of them… must be a direct result of exactly where on the field they have to play, always close to the action and very, very often having to tackle props, locks, hookers & looseforwards.

Another interesting fact is which South African Loosies feature in the top 20 as well as the fact that Pierre Spies, who is reviled for missing tackles does not even feature in the top 20…. hehehe

Just check out No 3 Josh Strauss (29 missed), No 8 Willem Alberts (27 missed) – and he has missed about 4 or 5 games this season as well, No 12 Philip van der Walt (25 missed), No 15 Keegan Daniel (24 missed).

Just look how frail Peter Grant seems to be on defence, he has’nt started or played in every Super Rugby game either, No 5 (28 missed).

Interesting that what I said very early, before Super Rugby season, that Robert Ebersohn is suspect on defence, No 15 (24 missed).

During this Super Rugby campaign our only critisism of Willie le Roux has been that he is not good at defence… proven here again too, No 8 (27 missed).

Also 3 flyhalves in the top 20… Peter Grant, Beauden Barrett & Elton Jantjies.

MOST TACKLES MADE stat is also interesting…

Marcell Coetzee has really impressed me this season…. and to my mind MUST be pushing Heinrich Brussow close for openside Springbok spot.

Brussow & Kolisi’s stats also very impressive.

Marcell Coetzee’s dicipline also showing nicely, him not being in the top 20 stat for penalties conceded

    Another interesting fact

Notice Coenie is way ahead of Brussow in the Pilfering department which might explain why he’s up so high on conceded penalties.

    Yes…

What worries me is that the props, specially Loosehead props, are pinged so many times for scrum penalties…. in my mind it’s the scrum Laws and rules which are wrong, rather than the props’ lack of dicipline!

Almost freegin half of the top 20 players conceeding the most penalties are props!

    @ grootblousmile:
I couldn’t agree more. I also hate the long intervals between the “Crouch – Touch – Pause – Engage” nonsense. Some refs are quite silly when it get’s to this. Seems like they are trying to catch you out with being unpredictable with the pause lenght.

    5 @ bos_otter:
A stat I’d like to see is what percentage of all penalties are scrum penalties…. it feels like it should be close to a third of all penalties or thereabouts… well it feels that way!

  • 7

    5 @ bos_otter:
Fark, some refs piss me off with this too… the idea and rationale behind scrums is for scrums to be a hotly contested area of the game, where power and guile rules, rather than for penalties to freegin happen.
