Scotland have named a 28-strong playing squad for their summer tour to Australasia (Australia, Fiji, Samoa)  which includes Edinburgh Rugby backs Tom Brown and Tim Visser.

rugbyweek

There are five uncapped players in the squad including Glasgow Warriors forwards Ryan Grant, Robert Harley, Tom Ryder as well as Brown and Visser.

Twenty-four-year-old Dutch born winger, will qualify for Scotland through the three-year residency rule on 12 June and will thus be available for selection for the Tests against Fiji and Samoa.

Grant, Harley, Ryder and Brown were among the Scotland A squad who put England Saxons to the sword 35-0 at Netherdale in February

Also listed are three players who have won a solitary Scotland cap to date, having made their debuts during the 2012 RBS 6 Nations Championship – the 21-year-old backs, Duncan Weir and Matt Scott, and Glasgow Warriors’ prop Jon Welsh.

For the Tests against Australia, Fiji and Samoa next month, the Scotland party also includes experienced British and Irish Lions Ross Ford (the tour captain), Mike Blair, Chris Cusiter and Euan Murray.

Scotland head coach Andy Robinson said: “This is a tough tour for Scotland. We’ll be playing against three attack-minded teams on their own turf. But it’s an important opportunity to start the rebuilding process after a disappointing Six Nations.

“One quarter of the squad has yet to start an international but we’ve seen from the manner in which Edinburgh and Glasgow have finished the domestic season that there’s confidence that we will be looking to build on. ”

Visser, who has scored a remarkable 43 tries in 74 appearances for Edinburgh since he joined from Newcastle Falcons three years ago, and has been top try scorer in the RaboDirect PRO12 for the past three seasons, is delighted by his call-up.

Scotland squad for the summer tour to Australia, Fiji and Samoa:

Howzit GBS, just back in for a wee while. Great to see TIM VISSER IS PICKED! Some interesting choices in the team, hopefully the new guys will grab their opportunity, a shame for the injured ones to be missing out. Have just been wondering why its only a 28 man squad, its going to be a physical tour after a long season, may have been better to have taken another 4 or 5 guys.

I see that the The IRB have ruled in favour of Wales in Steven Shingler’s eligibility case which went on appeal, so he won’t be turning out for Scotland

Yes this is a pity JFK but the rules are the rules whatever one thinks of them and feel it was very unprofessionally handled by Scottish rugby they should have made absolutely sure before drafting him into the squad last time in the first place, only talk coming from Scottish camp seems to be quotes on various media sites strange to see nothing on SRU’s news site at all about this. Wales on the other hand have a statement on their official site proclaiming their satisfaction with the outcome, BUT don’t say whether Shingler will be considered for Wales in future, maybe its a bit early days with lots of emotion surrounding them and the player but someone should ask WRU a direct question in this regard so we can see if he will be considered for senior Welsh selection again. If he was talented enough to play for Wales u20 and is now progressing with London Irish then surely at some point Wales must pick him, but will they?

5@ Bullscot:Yeah, I hope Wales are big enough to pick him if he is good enough.
