As regards the rugby crowd attendance, here’s my 2 cents. Rugby is a product and like everything else has to compete in todays vast and varied marketplace of entertainment and distractions. There is no way that we are going back to the old ways while this system of “short terminism” is dominant in society. Everyone is trying to squeeze the public for every drop they can and thus they have devalued the worth of everything. There is too much rugby because administrators and players want to rake in more money, thereby making rugby no longer something special.
Thus the focus on the World Cup, as this at least is supposed to be special as it only occurs once every 4 years. So things won’t change as long as we continue on our “throw away, fuck the planet, just live for today and get as much as you can while you can” mentality!
