Springbok coach Heyneke Meyer says he regrets Jaque Fourie’s decision not to make himself available for the Springboks while he plays in Japan, but he respects it.

Fourie has a two-year contract with the Kobe Steel Kobelco Steelers and said while he plays there he won’t be available for the Springboks.

“His decision is definitely a sad day for Springbok rugby. He is one of the best ever and could have played 50 more Tests, but I grant him his opportunities,” Meyer told Die Burger.

“I appreciate the fact that he talked to me about it because I want players 100% committed to play for the Boks.

“However, this is now an opportunity for other players to show they can fill the big void left by Jaque.

“I wish him and his family only the best,” said Meyer.

Fourie played in 69 Tests and scored 32 tries for the Boks.

First he leaves the Lions in blaze of bad publicity, drops the Stormers and now SA Rugby. As good a player as he is, I for one will be glad not see him in a Springbok jersey.

He will try to get back for the next WC.

You mean to tell me you two would have reneged on a R22 million 2 year contract (6 months of which he had already completed) and returned home to play test rugby against the Poms with all the risks that go with it?
    Helllooooooo! Get real bruvvas……

    @ Pietman:
Pietman, the man should have had a provision in his contract for internationals. At 29 he still is in the prime of his career, and barring injury would have been 1st choice in his position. Do well in internationals and your market value increases. Why do you think soccer players who avoid internationals for a while suddnely make themselves available for their national teams again? Simply because they need to market themselves and to increase their value to clubs. After he has finished in Japan, which European club will touch him, especially at his value? But if he has performed in internationals, he will be sought after when his contract in Japan expires
