The Toyota Cheetahs left on their overseas leg of this year’s Super Rugby season.

Naka Drotske has made a number of changes and today announced his side to face the Brumbies.

Hopefully this will ignite, what has been a lack lustre Cheetahs team, that will face up against the Brumbies at the Canberra Stadium in Canberra, on Saturday 10 March at 06:35 SA Time.

Team:

1. Coenie “Shrek” Oosthuizen
2. Adriaan Strauss (c)
3. WP Nel
4. George Earle
5. Izak van der Westhuizen
6. Heinrich Brussow
7. Phillip van der Walt
8. Ashley Johnson
9. Tewis de Bruyn
10. Johan Goosen
11. Willie le Roux
12. Phillip Snyman
13. Robert Ebersohn
14. Cameron Jacobs
15. Hennie Daniller

Replacements:

16. Trevor Nyakane
17. Hercu Liebenberg
18. Davon Raubenheimer
19. Justin Downey
20. Piet van Zyl
21. Sias Ebersohn
22. Rayno Benjamin

As expected Coenie returns, after his neck operation. I hope that this will signal the return of a more physical rucking approach from the Cheetahs. In other changes George Earl replaces Andries Ferreira, Raubenheimer is demoted to the bench, to make way for the bustling Johnson. Amongst the backs, Cameron Jacobs gets a start in the place of Rocco Jansen. With Waltie Vermeulen not available due to study commitments, and Lappies Labuschagne still recovering from a shoulder injury, the Cheetahs have opted for Raubenheimer on the bench, as lock cover. I am unsure, if Ferreira is injured, or is out of favour.

The Cheetahs have not shown any of their usual physical, or expansive approach thus far in the Super 15, but hopefully they will take this opportunity against a revamped Brumbies team. the Cheetahs will do well to take cognisance of the Brumbies win in their 1st match, and not be complacent!

Go Cheeeetahs!! We need the SA teams to win against overseas opposition!

Yes!!…Coenie and Ashley both in the team.

  • 2

Better with Coenie back and Ashley Johnson starting…. but why in hell keep going with Matewis de Bruyn in stead of Piet van Zyl at scrummie?

    … and there’s still a problem at the centres…

Snyman at centre was shown up badly… OK I know that Andries Strauss is still suspended this week, but hell the Cheetahs will have to organise their backline defence better and drift better, as a unit, on defence, helping to cover the wings who themselves are defensively a bit suspect on defence.

4 Tries against the current centres and wings, says I’m right!

    #2 @ GBS

I know how you feel about the Cheetahs centers GBS, but in fairness, Snyman played well at 12 last year. The Cheetahs were not allowed to play well vs a very good Bulls side. Lets wait a tad before passing judgement on the lad. (Not our fault the Bulls stole our best talent!!) The bulls were just simply awesome on saturday, and the Cheetahs woeful.

Apparently Ferreira, did not go on tour as a result of his studies, which is fair enough.

Agree on tewis, back the young guns Goosen, and van Zyl, and bring young Rademan in from the Varsity Cup

    3 @ Cheetah4eva:
Thing is, I think you overestimate how good the Bulls were. The Bulls are not the finished Article, not by a long shot… not yet!

Look, I’ll back off on Snyman… for now… but then if he’s not the problem or part of the problem, then the Cheetahs backline defensive system is a bigger problem than I initially thought. Also, the previous week against the Lions, Andries Strauss was better in organising the Cheetahs backline defence.

In general I don’t have a problem with the Cheetahs centres either… I think Robert Ebersohn is a great attacking centre, just not the best defender. I specifically like him and his brother…. their father, Tiaan Ebersohn (who was a marvelous centre in his days), went to Grey College with my elder brother, Kruppelbroer.

Brother, you’ve got to learn to be critical of your own side, and see their weaknesses… just like I have to be able to be critical on the Bulls, when there is a problem.

The Ozzmob, Brumbies included, run very good offensive backline lines… if the Cheetahs don’t adapt and shore up their backline drift defensive structure, Saturday morning might get very, very long for you okes too… and that is what I want to avoid as much as you Cheetahs supporters want to avoid it.

In fact, against the Ozzmob sides, one is often better suited to playing the rush defensive system or umbrella defensive system, hemming them in and cutting their space and time on the ball. One must play IN their faces and give them no room to breathe!

After the Bulls, the Cheetahs is my team of choice, far ahead of the Sharks, Stormers and Lions (and in that particular order)! The roots of both my parents lie in the Free State, my mother was from Clocolan in the beautiful Eastern Free State, my father from near Kroonstad PLUS my family has a rich history at Grey College and Oranje Meisies Hoër. My father wore the Vrystaat No 2 jersey in his days!

    Tewis is crap.

The VRYSTAAAAAAAAAAAAAAT can beat the Brumbies, Rebels and Canes. We have beaten the Crusaders before. [Ok not over there, but stil.]

So lets say 2 from 4 overseas……….I will be happy with that.

  • 6

    5 @ Loosehead:
That will mean by the time they come back to SA, they will have lost 4, won 2… placing them already on the borderline of not qualifying for the play-off’s.

Like last year, a team who loses 5 games in Super Rugby, can expect to be out of the running, definaltely out of Home-Semi contention, I think.

  • 7

    I-see-stars 4 @ GBS

I hear you, it’s just disruptive to a backline when injuries/suspension kicks in. Lets see how they go, because in their matches vs the stormers their defence was much better.

Bulls may not be the finished article, but they were way more fluid on attack, and brutally efficient at the breakdowns on saturday. If they can improve/maintain those standards, they will be hard to beat anywhere.

Maybe I am just the eternal optimist lol I-see-stars

Jong man het.

Hold judgement on Goosen till the end of the year!

    Cheetahs 33-20 Crusaders
    For Cheetahs:
Tries: R Ebersohn, S Ebersohn, Johnson
    Con: S Ebersohn 3
    Pen: S Ebersohn 4

    For Crusaders:
    Tries: Guildford, Carter
    Con: Carter 2
    Pen: Carter 2

It was partly the Ebersohn show, with twins Sias and Robert doing their international futures no harm with brilliant displays against the former champions. Sias at flyhalf and Robert at centre were monumental in the win, but there were many other heroes, especially flanker Ashley Johnson. Man-of-the-match Sias scored 23 points via a try, four penalties and three conversions and Robert the opening try.

    http://www.timeslive.co.za/sport/rugby/article1067621.ece/Cheetahs-put-Crusaders-to-sword

See my memory is not that short and with that i rest my case, with this last statement. Naka is ruining a very good players (Sias Ebersohn) future.
In this quoted paragraph in the Sunday Times all i said was reaffirmed.

  • 23

    Who-s-the-man

  • 25

Morné Steyn and Johan Goosen are the best 2 SA flyhalves, followed by Elton Jantjies… in that specific order.

  • 26

    Wink

  • 27

    26 @ Tripples:
Lambie sal sy skoppe pale toe moet verbeter… en mynsinsiens is hy anyway ‘n beter heelagter.

Nee Super…almal soek mos deesdae “organic” produkte. Ek jy praat waar. Ek dink hulle kort bietjie meer skaap en beesvleis by dieet.

  • 29

    27 @ GBS,

Ek is bly so baie spelers steek hande op…. dit gee Heyneke Meyer baie opsies!

Maar dis nie net beperk to heelagters of losskakels nie….

Daar is paar slotte wat baie goed deurkom, veral Juandré Kruger & Eben Etsebeth.
    Klompie senters wat goed woeker
Paar losvoorspelers wat nou hard begin klop
