Naka Drotske has named his team to take on the Lions at Coca-Cola Park, in the Cheetahs season opener on Saturday at 19h00.
Naka has really raised the eyebrows with his team selections, and bold he certainly is!
The biggest surprise is the name of Shimlas captain, Lappies Labuschagne, who leapfrogs Ashley Johnson, and Phillip van der Walt for the No 7 jumper! Labuschagne’s inclusion, is however subject to a fitness test after injuring his shoulder on Monday in the Vasity Cup match between Maties and Shimlas. Tewis de Bruyn gets the nod at No 9, with Van Zyl, on the bench. Walti Vermeulen provides cover for lock, even though he hasn’t featured much in the warm-up’s due to study commitments.
The Cheetahs:
1. Trevor Nyakane
2. Adriaan Strauss (Captain)
3. WP Nel
4. Andriess Ferreira
5. Izak van der Westhuizen
6. Heinrich Brussow
7. Lappies Labuschagne (Phillip van der Walt)
8. Davon Raubenheimer
9. Tewis de Bruyn
10. Johan Goosen
11. Rocco Jansen
12. Andries Strauss
13. Robert Ebersohn
14. Dusty Noble
15. Hennie Daniller
Replacements:
16. Lourens Adriaanse
17. Hercu Liebenberg
18. Walti Vermeulen
19. Ashley Johnson
20. Piet van Zyl
21. Sias Ebersohn
22. Willie le Roux
Sjoe! Look Lappies is a good player, but chosen above Ashley?
Or has Ashley cause kak and is being punished?
@ Loosehead,
Ash is a slow starter, last year he only real came good after the 1st 4 rounds or so. Then again, the lad got hitched, and that can seriously bugger a rugby players head around lol.
I am just surprised at the progree lappies has made, he has really worked hard. I am all for the move though, just not as impressed with raubenheimer at 8. He was nowhere vs the Bulls. I would have played Johnson/vd Walt at 8, and had raubenheimer on the bench. Clearly naka has been playing mind games in the warm-ups, and this might explain the lack lustre showing vs the Bulls. i am beginning to think that the lions might get hit by a Orange tide on saturday.
3: Oops ! ‘n Lekker eier in my gesig wat nr.2 betref maar ek eet hom graag ! 😉 Hopelik is hierdie wen (wanneer dit saak gemaak het!) onder leiding van AB die begin van goeie dinge vir die Proteas.
Hier is nou iets wat die Stormers manne MOET koop, dis immers van n era toe hulle nog trofees op Nuweland gehad het
SA Rugby magazine
The Stormers are selling 100 original Stormers jerseys (from 1998) on their online shop for R876. Any takers?
R876.Nee wragtig! That wouldn’t even fill my Hilux’s tank, for a trip to bloem lol. En dis darem baie geld vir loslappies om die lux te was
5@ superBul:…And whats the betting they sell a few to some poor unsuspecting fools!!!!. I am afraid, as much as I love the Stormers, I wouldn’t pay half that for an up to date jersey. Hell, I still wear my bok jersey I bought in 1995 for £10 – I was still living in UK then – and I still think I paid over the odds for that!
5@ superBul:I wonder if they made a mistake with the dot, and it should be R8.76? But even that would be paying over the odds!
“Interestingly Ashley Johnson has been named on the bench, with Drotske preferring Lappies Labuschagne to the big Bok flank. Labuschagne is struggling with a shoulder injury sustained in the Varsity Cup, and if he is forced to withdraw, his place will be taken by Phillip van der Walt”
Whats it with Naka and Ashley, every year this poor guy must start behind some new bloke and every time when he is used he plays a blinder. Naka would like to wish him away i think. This guy(Ashley) would have been a star at the Bulls by now. We show much more loyalty to a player. Just look how patient we were with Pierre Spies.
@ superBul #9,
To be fair to Naka, Ash didn’t start last year so well, and only hit a hot streak when Naka moved him to 7. Ashley also got married late last year, so maybe, he is having the honemoon syndrome! He will bounce back, and it’s hard to ignore the performances of Lappies, who has been playing some sublime rugby. Ashley Johnson on fire is something to behold, but he has some bad patches too.
I may be wrong, but I think it’s more a horses for cats approach, as Naka is looking at countering the Lions “fast paced”game plan!
