Springbok and Sharks prop Tendai “‘Beast” Mtawarira has been admitted to a private hospital in Cape Town suffering from heart palpitations.
According to the Sharks medical team Beast has had these palpitations for a while and it was thought best to have it treated while he is not playing rugby due to an ankle injury.
The hospital has not been named, but it is believed to have one of the best Heart Units in the world. “They have a new procedure where the heart is treated with lasers. Hopefully it will solve his problem,” the Sharks explained.

Here’s the Sharks official Media Release about the matter:
As a national rugby icon, Shark and Springbok loosehead prop Tendai “Beast” Mtawarira attracts a lot of attention. As such, a visit to a Cape Town hospital has led to rumours about his current state of health and The Sharks (Pty) Ltd would like to outline the facts.
According to Sharks Team Doctor Ewoudt van der Linde, Mtawarira suffers from mild heart palpitations, which is a very common condition prevalent in a large number of the general public. As such, it is in no way rugby-related but is simply a general medical condition.
“It is not serious, not life threatening and will definitely not have an influence on his rugby career in any way,” he explains. “It does not, and will not affect his ability nor the longevity of his career.”
Mtawarira has undergone treatment in Cape Town. The hospital offers the only medical unit in South Africa where they can do the particular procedure (which is very new) to try and cure his palpitations.
This medical information related to his current condition is given out on the basis of accuracy and to ensure the rugby-loving public that it is not considered serious. Although he is a Shark and Springbok rugby player and is constantly in the spotlight, it is requested that people respect his privacy and patient confidentiality.
“This was just something small that was bugging me, but it is all resolved and nothing serious to worry about at all,” explains Mtawarira. “I am home and doing my rehab at The Sharks Medical Centre for my ankle, which is going well and is all on track.”
The decision to treat this condition at the present time was taken because his absence from rugby due to this current ankle injury afforded the opportunity to undertake the treatment.
His ankle is doing very well and he should be up and running within the next few months.
Bad news for him. Apparently his family has a history of heart problems.
I would think that he is in Panorama being treated by Wouter Basson.
Maybe we should make an injury update! Seeing as there are quite a few injuries to key players:
Bulls: Lionel Cronje, Mabeta, Sadie, Dewaldt Potgieter????
Cheetahs: Juan Smith, Coenie Oosthuizen, and strauss (suspended)
Sharks: Beast, Redelinghuys, Hargreaves, Deysel???
Lions: Mapoe, van Heerden, Ruan Botha, Maku???
Stormers: Deon Fourie, Elstadt, Burger??
3@ Cheetah4eva:Good idea, maybe, GBS you should make it a sticky during the week, that we can all update as we get news, seems a very good idea to have it one place.
4 @ Just For Kicks:
Problem is, one cannot make more than ONE guy AUTHOR of the Article, which would mean that only THAT AUTHOR can change the Article…. apart from Webadministrators… who can change ANYTHING…
… and there’s only 2 of us Administrators… Me and SuperBees…
It would be risky to make the Authors Admins, because one can fark up the whole system as an Admin, if you’re not careful… one gets much deeper into the Site Admin portion, that way… and see a lot more than Authors.
(Must check if there is a multiple Author Plugin I could use)
4@ grootblousmile:Yes, but if we all comment, you can change the article yourself – more work for you, hahaha!
6 @ Just For Kicks:
No, no, no… not MORE work for me…. as is I have to Edit all the stuff anyway…
But like I said… I’ll find a Co-Author Plugin… which is what I just did, installed it, and it is functioning, so now we can have MULTIPLE AUTHORS on 1 Article!
