Wicket. Jawardene LBW Bowled De Lange for 14. SL44/3
Great ball from De Lange, swung in ever so slightly, and Jawa just misjudged it.
Bill O Reilly said this of the ‘Don’
“There’s never been and never will be in my estimation a batsman so good as that fella. I don’t care how many you like to pour into one – all the Chappells, the Borders and so on. Forget them, they’re just child’s play compared with Bradman, and I’ve seen them all. Bradman was a bloke whose ability with the bat was absolutely inconceivable. The Yanks talk about Babe Ruth and all that. To hell with Babe Ruth. This boy was a modern miracle.”
Well thats lunch, SL 65/3. A morning marred by rain, and a delay to the start of the day has seen a shortened session, with 2 wickets and a dropped catch. Morkel has looked much better today, whilst the Srilankans have played well within themselves, and know that if they can get a good score here and that the rain holds off, they could conceivably force a win.
goooooooodafternoon everyone!!
must say our batting yesterday was poor (to say the least)!! theres still a long way to go and quite a few things to get right before we can even start thinking of challenging for the no.1 spot in either test or limited overs cricket!! (boucher, openers, morkel etc to name but a few)
steyn also concern me a bit … its the 4th test (counting from when aus were here) that he’s been outplayed (outbowled?) by a teammate with less experience … yes, you could almost understand that vernon (with the way he bowl) are due to get more wickets than steyn on more occassions, but a greenhorn? outperforming his senior partner? and in such an emphatic way? (8 wickets vs 1 … AND the 1 came in gloomy conditions!!) come-on!!
Hello!
I’ll be in and out… busy delegating stuff to some willing helpers, like I indicated I would be doing during this time of the year.
Also replacing some rubbers and shit on a number of taps in and around the house.
Have to go to the hardware quickly to buys some more tap rubbers and washers…
The cricket… well I think the game is fast becoming beyond the reach of the Ama-chokers, unless they get the next 7 wickets within the space of say another 30 runs…
Michael Parkinson on Bradman:
‘There is, for instance, the tale of Bill Black, an off-spin bowler playing for Lithgow, who on a memorable day in 1931 bowled Bradman for 52. The umpire was so excited that when the ball hit Bradman’s wicket he called out: “Bill, you’ve got him.”
The ball was mounted and given to Black as proof that he had dismissed the greatest batsman in the world.
Later that season Don Bradman again played against Black. As the bowler marked out his run, Don said to the wicketkeeper: “What sort of bowler is this fellow?”
The wicketkeeper, a mischief-maker like the rest of his tribe, replied: “Don’t you remember this bloke? He bowled you out a few weeks ago and has been boasting about it ever since.”
“Is that so?” said Bradman. Two overs later Black pleaded with his skipper to be taken off. Bradman had hit him for 62 runs in two eight-ball overs. He made 100 in three overs and finished with 256, including 14 sixes and 29 fours.’
lunch. sangakarra still there after being dropped on 3 AND he’s due to big score … oh dear!!
#128
shouldve been … due A big score
jfk @ 127
jeez!! is that true?
130@ Ashley:Yup, according to Parkinson in his memoirs
jfk @ 131
lol, black mustve made quite a fuss out of it when he got the don!!
hmmmm, we’re in big trouble here … who to turn to?
sri lanka 100/3 (lead of 271 already) … sigh
ok, i’m following the game on cricinfo … see that steyn only bowled 5 overs for the day … whats going on? he injured? anyone?
134@ Ashley:Just walked back in, I don’t think he’s injured, I am not sure why he’s bowled so few. I will endeavour to find out
Steyns bowled 7 overs, De Lange 8 and Kallis 7. Morkel has bowled 10, but he is in desperate need of bowling time. So they’ve been much even
over 34 now, tahir bowling
run rate last 10 overs: 4,1
things not looking good for us!!
137@ Ashley:Yup, I think only rain can save us now!
On a Yorkshire cricket lover watching Don Bradman in the summer of 1948.
He loved him, for his brilliant batsmanship, and hated him, for all those runs scored against his side. As Bradman walked off the Headingley ground for the last time, having hit 173 not out to take Australia to an emphatic victory, this Yorkshireman stopped the foreign foe on the pavilion steps. Eyes brimming with tears – tears of anger and of admiration – he spoke the two words that best expressed his complex
emotions: “Yer booger!”
jfk @ 136
kallis has been dishing up sh*t, de lange is a rookie, not sure about giving morné bowling practice at this level. surely your “main strike bowler” (steyn) should be given the responsibility of trying to get the breakthrough?
..
and while i’m typing this, i see steyn is back into the attack. ok, lets see what the “best bowler in the world” can do …. Steyn to Samaraweera, FOUR … ag k*k!!
Boucher really struggling with Tahir’s bounce and spin in that last over – conceded a few byes
sri lanka’s lead now 302 with 7 wickets in hand!
#142
the way we’re bowling at the moment, i cant see us chasing less than 400 – 450
and the way we batted in the 1st innings, i cant see us get close to that!!
140@ Ashley:At his age Kallis is always going to be a stop gap bowler, the ‘chokers really missing Philander as the alrounder, De Lange may be the rookie, but look who’s taken all the wickets in the match. Agree on Morkel, I don’t know if he should really be playing this match, but Donald has put in a lot of work with him between the 2 tests, and had confidence in him. One thing I can say, is that he is looking better than the first innings. As for Steyn, I just don’t know. Perhaps the move to the Mother City and the girlfriend and Christmas have just taken too much out of him, because he is not at his best. He’s only taken 1 wicket in this test, and that was in the dark!
Wicket. Samaraweera Bowled Tahir 43. SL 138/4
At last a wicket, but the way that pitch has been playing up to Tahirs bowling over the last couple of overs, the SL’s will be licking their lips
wicket!! tahir!! can we get a few more now?
jfk @ 146
exactly
#144
on morné looking better in the 2nd innings … maybe this is his last chance?
Wicket! Matthews Bowled Steyn caught Boucher for 3. SL 141/5
Is Graeme Smith out yet?
