A quick 100 from Marchant would certainly seal his spot in the side!
@ Just For Kicks:
ok thanks that explains thats, the 2nd numbers must be an indication of where they were in relation to players capped before them and not what they would have worn on their shirts surely. Some interesting names in that list who would have opened the batting between Hudson Wessels and Jimmy Cook?
Steyn comes down the wicket first ball of the over and smacks a 4. Second ball, he shoulders arms like a pro! Smith, look and learn
At least Tahir stayed around long enough to help avoid the follow on but surely in the match situation was a bit reckless, I know its not his fault the frontline batsmen were so poor but still once you’re out there you can’t throw your wicket away, oh well he will have to make ammends for it with his bowling about time now he took a lot of wickets in an innings
92@ Bullscot:Both your summations are correct, the last player selected for SA back in 1970 was no.235, and as we played no recognised cricket between then and ’92, Bosch makes it 236. But because of the Apartheid era, it was decided not to continue the numbers, even though the players prior to 1970 are still recognised, but to start from no.1 There were players who played for South Africa who played in between, but as these matches were unofficial, those players are not recognised.
94@ Bullscot:Yup, I expect the pitch to start taking a bit of turn in the next day or 2, so lets hope for some wickets
95@ Just For Kicks:
Its nice sometimes to go back and look at history can sometimes take a while to dust off the cobwebs and get the mind to remember things, when I first looked at your list I thought Mark Rushmere who was that??? But now am remembering his name is becoming more familiar – he was a batsmen probably somewhere between no 4 and 6 in the order I think and did he play for Eastern Province.
Thats it, SA all out for 168, seldom have I seen such a dismal display. Hats off to Sri Lanka. They could well go on to win this one. Especially if the pitch is going to deteriorate as I suspect it will
Oh dear all out but some very valuable runs for the last 2 wickets – 49 runs, going to be tough to get out of this one, Steyn and Morkel and Tahir need to do their bit and try get Sri Lanka out cheaply…
SA all out for 168, they trail by 170 runs.
97@ Bullscot:From Cricinfo – A right-hand opening batsman, Mark Rushmere played just one Test, South Africa’s first after their return from isolation against West Indies in Barbados. That he won only one cap was surprising given that he had been touted as an exceptional talent from a young age. He captained Eastern Province at 23, and after making his one-day debut in the 1992 World Cup, seemed set for great things and was talked of as a future South Africa captain. But he was discarded and his own form waned – critics pointed out his weakness in playing the hook – and he never regained his place. He retired in 1999 and was regarded as one of domestic cricket’s best captains.
What has Jacques Rudolph done to deserve his spot in the side or to retain it from heron in?
Fokkolllllll!
Prince too…
Time to throw them back on the rubish dump and select players who want to do the job.
@ grootblousmile:Rudolph just hasn’t made the step up for some reason, and agree, needs to go home – he’s had his chance. Prince has been worked out now, and perhaps should go, but I really feel that this team will never gel and bond and get better when you have Smith and Kirsten together. Kirsten played under Smith, and there is no way Smith will ever climb down enough to work under Kirsten now. He should be dropped if for no other reason than to give Kirsten a decent chance
Wicketttttt! Dilshan gone, Bowled Steyn caught Smith for 4.
On Bradman-
In Adelaide against the might of the West Indies Merv Hughes had just completed his highest Test innings of 72 not out, sharing in an 114 run 9th wicket partnership with Dean Jones (216). Hughes was relaxing, towel around his neck, enjoying a cold something and bathing in the kudos of his colleagues for some cavalier, entertaining and ridiculous
batsmanship. Then The Don entered the room. After congratulating Jones on his strokeplay, Bradman cast an eye at the big, sweaty, moustachioed fast bowler, shook his head and said, “It’s a funny game, cricket.”
Thats one down already good stuff Steyn
Looks like there could be some rain early on Wednesday so possibly a delayed start and then cloudy conditions could help the bowlers, other than that conditions should be good Thursday and much of Friday so this one should produce a result. Am going to stick my neck out here and predict a win for SA, wonder what the odds are for that at this stage
Well thats it for another day, Sri Lanka deserve all the glory today, except for a small mention for a man, who on debut, took 7 wickets in his first innings. SL won every session by a country mile, and have put themselves in a strong position to topple the Proteas in this match. Only a rearguard action from the tail-enders saved us from real embarrassment today, and Steyn, who didn’t take a wicket in the first innings came back from scoring a quick fire 29 off 36 balls to take the first wicket before the close of play. SA are really going to have to some soul searching tonight, and come back all the stronger tomorrow if they are to have any chance of winning this match.
107@ Bullscot:What has your neck ever done to deserve that!!!!! Cheers all catch you all on the morrow
109@ Just For Kicks:
given me headaches at times maybe thats just me trying to be optimistic but I feel if we can restrict Sri Lanka to arounD 150-180ish in 2nd innings then it is possible surely can’t bat as poorly in the 2nd innings. Just had a quick look at odds for SA winning one site has 15/8 and another 7/4 so considering the current match situation hardly enticing one to go out and take a punt on it, maybe if it was something like 5/1 would have been worth it, anyway don’t really know much about the betting. Cheers for now JFK
103 @ Just For Kicks:
Can’t fault your reasoning, I’ve never been a Greame Smith – Biff, groupie….
I say, Gazza Kirsten has made some bold moves to bring in Philander and now De Lange… so he’s been bold on the bowling side of things. They have not let him down either, they have produced.
Now he must be bold enough to let some batting stragglers go as well…. Biff, Rudolph & Prince… and to replace them with in form youngsters.
The new broom MUST sweep, and it must sweep clean!
@ grootblousmile:
57
ironic that Steyn a boykie from Phalaborwa was replaced by Marchant from Tzaneen. Do i read too much into the move by Dale to the WP, or is it just girlfriend attention?
Well still feeling pretty shitty, this damn flu has really stuck its claws in. Doesn’t look too promising in Sopkoppieville this morning, has been some rain around, although it is clearing up. When I last saw, the light covers were on, and the rain had cleared up. I haven’t been paying too much attention though, and alas, cannot tell you when play is set to resume. I will however update you when I know.
10.40am, covers are off, and boys are warming up, play looks imminent.
111@ grootblousmile:I would like to see Hashim Amla as Captain. He has the temperament, the knowledge and the respect of those around him.
Well play underway, second over, Sangakarra nicks one off Morkel to first slip, only for Boucher to dive across and put the catch down. Is this a sign of things to come? One hopes not.
I will continue the Bradman theme from yesterday – this one is from Bradman on sledging –
“I played under Alan Kippax in New South Wales for some time, I played under Jack Ryder in the Test series in 28-29, I played under Bill Woodfull in 1930 until he retired, and I captained the side until I retired. And in the whole of that time, I don’t recall one single incident of sledging. It never occurred, and it would not have occurred because it would not have been allowed, not one of those captains would have allowed it. If it had happened under me I would have given the fellow one warni ng, and if it had happened again I would have made sure he was not selected again…. it never went on in my day, not at all, and I don’t think it should happen now.”
Wicket – Para. Bowled Morkel caught Princce for 9. SL20/2
Morkel looking much better today, rhythm back, and run up looks good. Making the batsmen play at almost every ball.
SA really need to get these 2 out quickly, if not, they will take the game away from us. Bougher may well rue that dropped catch if nothing happens soon
