60 @ Just For Kicks:
Wife, Handbriekie, wants to schlepp me off to Makro… eishhh
See you later.
Well, I never thought that we could be this poor, 3 top wickets, two of them Christmas presents from a very generous ‘Santa’ Smith and his sidekick Rudolph the red faced plonker. Kallis’ was a good ball, but Kallis didn’t help himself with his foot movement, etc. How to ruin my Christmas, eishhh
It didn’t just happen here:-
The doyen of Sri Lankan batsmen was undoubtedly F.C. (Derek) De Saram. He was born in 1912, into a home of sport and privilege. De Saram was an upper class Burgher who studied at Royal College, Colombo, before going up to Oxford in 1932. Here he was treated shamefully by the cricket authorities (as, years before at Cambridge, had been the experience of another brown-skinned aristocrat, K. S. Ranjitsinhji). They would not even give him a net, so he went off instead to the tennis courts. Here the equation was man-to-man, and the colour of one’s skin did not matter so long as one beat one’s opponent 6-0, 6-0. De Saram got his tennis Blue two years in a row, then tried his hand once more at The Parks. He was picked for the game against the visiting Australians, scoring an immaculate 100, this against Clarrie Grimmett and Bill O’Reilly, who otherwise carried all before them that summer. Of an Oxford total of 216, last year’s reject made 128 (96 of these in boundaries), a lowly 16 being the next highest score. Three of his four sixes were hit off Grimmett. De Saram had now to be chosen for the University match, where he stroked a silken 85 in two hours at the crease.
Hashim cruises to fifty with another 4. Well done lad
Well thats tea, SA 100/3. An appalling start post lunch saw Smith, Rudolph and Kallis but in the hut very cheaply after playing some real Christmas fruit cake shots. Amla and De Villiers have, however steadied the ship, and have steered it to tea without any more mishaps. Amla’s has been an innings of immense patience, leaving when needed, and nonchalantly dispatching the poor balls to the rope. AB has played a couple of loose shots, but otherwise been very circumspect. As for the bowling, well not much to write home about, a wicket that is offering all but the minimum of assistance, and a deck that should be a pleasure to bat on at the moment, the SL’s have toiled away manfully, but to no avail.
John Bradman, the great ‘Dons’ son, remembers this from his youth. He always felt that his father should not be so revered that he becomes god-like.
“I was in the State Library recently where some of his things are in a collection … one item is a rug
which used to be on the floor of my room. It’s in the design of the Australian blazer pocket and it has a dark green ackground and in this dark green background are some faded patches. “I was standing next to some people and they were discussing these pale patches in hushed tones and with almost reverential significance … I could have
told them they were the patches where my little dog had peed on it.”
Oh holy crap…. SA 106 / 5
Amla the latest casualty, after AB de Villiers also perished with SA on 103.
Lost signal for a while, in that time, tea complete, the players came out so that De Villiers could deliver his gift, and what a gift it was. Playing to a wide half volley loosener, he gave the slips a present they wouldn’t want to refund at Toys R Us. With him gone, it was up to Amla and Prince, but hey, thats too much trouble, so Amla decided it was time to return for another cup of tea, and did so by nicking one to the keeper. Wow, how sad can one side be? SL’s are really up for it now, they really have a chance and can smell the artichoke blood
……and a review for LBW to Prince
Not out
68 @ Just For Kicks:
I thought you said this was going to be batting practice….
Eishhhh!
Sheesh, when you look at the SL bowling line up, and the pitch in its current state, you can only wonder what it is about our lads that makes them have such brainfarts.
Boucher gone, caught in the slips for 3. Pathetic
Steyn looks pretty much at sea too
Question – Who wore No.1 on his shirt for SA post isolation in the test team?
And another, prince with a daft reverse sweep – what did I say about brainfarts, its an insult to brainfarts!!!!!
Eishhhh, another wicket down…
SA 119 / 7
119 / 8
Morkel departs without worrying the scoreboard
Fark, we still need 20 to avoid the follow-on, should Sri Lanka choose to enforce it
Ouch whats goin on here?
80 @ Bullscot:
Hello Bully!
In answer to my own question, it was Tertius Bosch. Interestingly, that first team post isolation were given their numbers alphabetically, so Kepler, who was captain was only no.11
81@ grootblousmile:
Hello Gbs how are you doing man? Just awake from my slumber to see this horrible score, I see all except one wicket has been caught – tells me batsmen have been careless or has the bowling been thah good?
Thats drinks, lets hope that for the Slappies its something with about a 98% proof. They need something surely to hide the embarrassment
83@ Bullscot:With all the respect in the world, the bowling good? – Average at best. No, at least 6 of the 8 wickets were gifts
Having said that, Fernando has just bowled a peach to Tahir – Tahir did well to dig that one out
82@ Just For Kicks:
Hello JFK, interesting one I was about to post Andrew Hudson or Kepler Wessels in answer to your question, why did they do it that way was that what all teams were doing at the time?
87@ Bullscot:Greetings, the reason was that for that first team, where all the players were playing their first test, the best and fairest way was to do it was alphabetically. Bosch was therefore first. For interest the rest are below. The second number is what their numbers would have been, had we not had the isolation period. In other words, they follow on from John Traicos, who was number 235, and was the last player to be selected before isolation in 1970
1 236 Tertius Bosch
2 237 Hansie Cronje
3 238 Allan Donald
4 239 Andrew Hudson
5 240 Peter Kirsten
6 241 Adrian Kuiper
7 242 Meyrick Pringle
8 243 David Richardson
9 244 Mark Rushmere
10 245 Richard Snell
11 246 Kepler Wessels
12 247 Jimmy Cook
Steyn & Tahir doing the only thing they know… and that is to heave-ho…
… and there another SA wicket falls, that of Tahir… stumped!
SA 145 / 9
Tahir gone, stumped, but a hero, saved the follow on!
