The Golden Lions Rugby Union received notification this morning via social networking website www.twitter.com that a rumour has been circulating that the Golden Lions Rugby Union are bankrupt and can only afford to pay their players’ salaries until the end of the month.

The initial rumours, circulated via an individual’s blog website stated that the information was received from a “reliable source”, but would not name the source.

The Golden Lions Rugby Union would like to reiterate the comments that “they are malicious rumours” made on Twitter in response to numerous queries from supporters.

”Statements such as those made by this individual are incredibly damaging as they create an unnecessary sense of unease and panic amongst those within the Union structures. We will not tolerate this and are seeking legal advice”, President of the GLRU Mr. Kevin de Klerk said.

Further statements in this individual’s blog stated ‘given that the Lions have been in financial poo for a while, I can well believe this news. After all the previous investors did not pull out of the deal without reason…’

”The relationship with the previous equity partners did not work out, but the matter was closed on 28 June 2011 and we will not rehash or reopen that discussion”, de Klerk said.

The closing line of the article states ‘that John Mitchell and his team performed despite this is the amazing, yet slightly sad, side to the story’.

The fact of the matter is that the team performed so well due to the stability and continuity experienced within the Lions. The coaching staff and players received support from management and administrators in every way possible, and the results speak for themselves.

”The new equity partners, in conjunction with the existing management, have made numerous changes within the Union’s structures and we are in a better position at the moment than we have been in quite some time. The Union is growing in both strength and stature and rumours such as these started by one individual can potentially undo much of the good work done over the past few months.

”This matter is now considered closed and until we have had formal discussions with our legal team on the way forward, we will not be commenting any further”, Mr. de Klerk concluded.

I am glad the Golden Lions reacted on these rumours so quickly…

… and if I know them well enough Tank Lanning has just lost his Lions Media Accreditation… like Walter did a year or 2 ago when he critisized the Lions.

Well having said only yesterday that there’s no rugby stories out there, one comes along and bites you on the bum. All the skinner and backbiting, a couple more of these, and it could turn out to be a very exciting Christmas. Seriously though, how daft of someone of Lannings calibre to have said all that without confirming it first. I fear a few jugs of amber nectar may have clouded the judgement a bit.

So what……no Derrick, Doppies, Jaco and Elton in my Christmas stocking this year????

    2 @ Just For Kicks:
Tank could have opened himself up for quite a law suit against himself… time will tell.

His only defence would be that it is the truth or in the public interest, luckily for him he termed it as “rumours”, but still you are right, he should have confirmed it or approached the Lions for reaction, including their reaction in his Article.

@ Stormersboy:I can see you’re as devastated as I am! I even had my camper van packed to go and pick up Elton personally!!!! Also checked my piggy bank to offer him what I had. I feel bummed now, I broke it when opening it, now I have nowhere to put my R23.55 in small change into for safe keeping

@ Just For Kicks:…but hey, don’t worry, you still have four broken elves and a couple of fairies to look forward to in your stocking!

    6 @ Just For Kicks:
What is the definition or description of “Elves”?

Answer: They are little men who fcuk fairies….

    Hahahaha

@ grootblousmile:Hahahaha, brilliant, I like your sense of humour!

Just watched Sehwags 219, brilliant innings. Unfortunately WI looked decidedly normal, and without their hearts in the game.

Glad the union came out swinging on this one.
    Stormersboy: Sorry for you………..not!!!!!
Watch those guys you mentioned spearhead the Lions Super Rugby assault next year.

    6 @ Just For Kicks:
When you first mentioned four broken elves and a couple of fairies, I thought you were actually referring to the Stormers players.

    Now I’m looking for kak!

    Bwahahaha

11@ grootblousmile:I was….whoops, has that put me in it too?

Where theres smoke theres fire. They must move their venue!!!

  • 14

    13 @ 4man:
4man, no – the smoke was all up Tank Lanning’s backside!

Altmann Allers, the owner of Glassfit and part of the Lions Management structure for a number of years already, has bailed the Golden Lions out and is formally the new Lions investor, for the time being… till suitable BEE Equity partners are found.

There is no immediate problem at the Golden Lions, I repeat, no immediate problem at the Lions.

That’s what I hate about the “Where there’s smoke theory”, it is baseless and based on a very false premise, it’s so easy to say, without a shred of evidence! In this case (Lanning) it is based on the whims of a guy who was recently asked to leave his job due to the kak he spoke on social media platforms, yet now he continues to spew more kak on these same social media newtworks.

The “Where there’s smoke theory” is based on assumption, which is the mother of all fluckups!

… and so the damage is carried forward and perpetuated, to the detriment of the Lions!

Now suddenly you presume and assume it’s about venue…

Although I personally agree that a venue change to FNB Stadium (Soccer City) would be a magnificent change to the better for the Lions, this debacle is NOT about venue… it is about unsubstantiated shit!
