As we move towards the end of the match, and things are relatively quiet, I will try and get one more joke in. It’s not a cricket joke, and it’s as old as the hills, but it is Christmas, so you can forgive me:

Johnny Wilkinson goes into the England changing room to find all his team mates looking a bit glum.
”What’s up?” he asks.
” Well, we’re having trouble getting motivated for this game. We know it’s important but we’ve just beaten the All Blacks and Australia in consecutive weeks and let’s be honest it’s only South Africa. They’re really bad and we
    just can’t be bothered”.
Johnny looks at them and says “Well, the way I’ve been playing
recently, I reckon I can beat them by myself, you lads go down the
pub.”
So Johnny goes out to play South Africa by himself and the rest of the England team go off for a few jars.
After a few pints they wonder how the game is going, so they get the landlord to put the telly on. A big cheer goes up as the screen reads
” England 7 – South Africa 0
Wilkinson – 10 minutes – Converted Try)”.
He is beating South Africa all by himself ! Anyway, the telly goes off and a few more pints later the game is forgotten until someone
remembers
” It must be full time now, let’s see how Johnny got on”. They put the telly back on.
“Result from the Stadium: England 7 (Wilkinson 10 minutes) – South Africa 7 (Paulse 79 minutes)”.
They can’t believe it, Johnny has single handedly got a draw against South Africa and maintained England’s unbeaten run at home!!
T hey rush back to the Stadium to congratulate him. They find him in
the dressing room, still in his gear, sat with his head in his hands.
He refuses to look at them. “I’ve let you down, I’ve let you down.”
says Johnny.
” Don’t be daft, you got a draw against South Africa, all by yourself. And they only scored at the very very end!” says the rest of the team.
“No, No, I have” says Wilkinson, “I’ve let you down… I got sent off
after 12 minutes

Wicketttt! Welegeara. Caught and bowled Philander for 10. SL 145/9

  • 245

Kallis out for revenge, Fernando batting, all the fielders round the bat, and he’s bowling short……very short. Thats 3, and the last was given as a no ball, so there is definitely intent there!

  • 246

Game over. This is just not god for cricket.
I am looking forward to the rugby at 15h30.

Wickettttttttttt! Herath – and you can guess who bowled it……Philander, caught Boucher for 23. Thats another fifer, and a 10 wicket haul for the match. Well done young man, what a display. SL all out for 150

Well thats it, gentlemen, SA wins by an innings and 81 runs, and it’s all over before tea on day 3. Man of the match? Not too difficult, I think, it will almost certainly be the ‘Siri-slayer’ Philander. Not much else to say really, the SL batting in both innings was poor, the bowling, not much better, they are going to have to be on the blower to Santa pretty quickly to get some help before the Boxing Day test – And for me, thats the most important cricket day of the year for me, so they better not spoil it! For SA, the possibility of perhaps giving young Marchant De Lange a go instead of Morkel would be then only change I can see, but lets wait and see. Have a good Christmas boys, and just for this week you can hang up the artichoke tag.

    To finish then, one last one from Trueman;

The anecdotes surrounding Trueman are endless but the story is often the same – on the diplomacy stakes, he leaves a lot to be desired.

One Australian official might have regretted his benign question to Fred about what he thought of “our” magnificent Sydney Bridge.

“What do I think of ‘your bridge’?” Trueman spluttered indignantly. “Your bridge? Our bloody bridge you should say – bugger it – a Yorkshire firm – Dorman and Long – built it – and you bastards still ain’t paid for it”.
