The Bulls have turned down a request from former Springbok flyhalf Derick Hougaard to return to Pretoria to play for them.

The 28-year-old Hougaard – currently recovering after an Achilles operation – was in Pretoria two weeks ago where he was in discussions with Bulls coach Frans Ludeke and senior professional coach Heyneke Meyer about a possible move back to Loftus Versfeld.
Hougaard currently plays for English club, Saracens, and according to the Beeld newspaper the uncertainty regarding his form after his operations (he had two recent operations on his Achilles) probably discouraged the Bulls to offer him a contract.
“Unfortunately we cannot currently accommodate Derick in our structure. If Derick is fit and injury-free, he will still be a world class player. And if the situation changes and circumstances necessitate it, we will gladly call on him,” said Meyer.
Hougaard – who has repeatedly stated he would love to come back to South Africa – is understandably very disappointed. This is now the second time this year that talks between him and his former union about a possible return have failed.
“I got so many messages from fans after the news that I might come back, but who knows, maybe things will work out one day,” said Hougaard.
Liefling, I am sure, nay, positive, that there is a place for you at the stormers. We have a serious shortage of flyhalves down here!
An Achilles injury, coupled with the necessary operations to fix it takes a very long time to heal properly… as Bakkies is testimony to.
Let him get fully fit and completely over the injury first, then get conditioned properly at the expense of Sarries… then he might be a viable proposition.
I’m sure that is the understanding with which Derick and the Bulls are left with.
Liefling is still one of the flyhalves in world rugby who knows how to dictate a game and to me that is probably the crucial requirement in a flyhalf.
The great flyhalves of all time all had this ability to take a game by the scruff of the neck and direct play.
He often played too deep in the pocket though and with modern rugby one needs to know when to be very flat and when to be deep in the pocket.
A flyhalf like liefling also needs a scrumhalf with a very secure and very good and long passing ability, someone who can take all the pressure off the flyhalf with that special pass.
He would fit in perfectly at the Stormers, alongside Schalk Ferreira and Adi Jacobs.

Don’t think he’ll fit in at the Stormers… he still wants to play BIG Rugby… hehehe
While it may have been tempting to have a quality experienced backup to Morne Steyn who has been completely overplayed the last few seasons this is really good thinking by Bulls management as Hougaard has been injured a fair bit now so maybe it is better to wait and see how he gets on when he recovers from injury, there should be no rush at Saracens to get him playing before he is completely healed as they have quality there in young Farrell and experienced Charlie Hodgson. May be a bit of a chance though for the young flyhalves at Bulls to grab their chance lets hope that they can make the step up.

Eina!
The Kings perhaps?
6 @ Loosehead:
I can see the name in lights…. “King Liefling”
Kings have a very average flyhalf… whatshisname… has played all over the place… he’s been with the Cheetahs as well recently….
Ah, now I remember… Louis Strydom (I think)
5 @ Bullscot:
Bulls have Louis Fouché and Lionel Cronje… who will both be fighting to be Morné Steyn’s understudy, and I believe both have potential.
Then also Wesley Dunlop, Tukkies captain for 2011 (Who plays for the Leopards now) is also in the wider Bulls training group.
I agree with you, let’s see if Hougaard can put the injuries behind him, the last thing one wants to do is invest in a sick-note… like has happened to the Lions as well as the Western Force with Andre Pretorius.
Would he actually play? Bulls have som edepth at flyhalf

This is just the right medicine for the 2 youngsters. They must look who is behind them and step out. It will show how serious their challenge is. They must do what Elton Jantjies did and seize the opportunity. So many number 10 show potential but few show real commitment.
Hougaart served the Bulls well and i agree with the way the Union protect their own interest, Derick will have to play himself back, no easy ride at the Bulls.
