AUSTRALIA will defend their southern hemisphere title next year in an expanded competition called The Rugby Championship – and will meet new boys Argentina on the Gold Coast.
The new title of the expanded Tri Nations competition will be unveiled today after the Wallabies named their squad yesterday for an abbreviated spring tour later this month.
The Wallabies will play the Barbarians at Twickenham and Wales in Cardiff on a revenue-raising two-week trip, but already eyes have turned towards the exciting new winter competition from 2012 onwards featuring Australia and the top southern hemisphere sides.
Not keen to simply upgrade the Tri Nations to the Four or Quad Nations (league and rugby competitions already exist with both names) SANZAR bosses – and new boys Argentina – agreed upon the simple title of The Rugby Championship.
It will allow each nation to sell sponsorship rights that smoothly – or awkwardly, depending on your viewpoint – sit within the title. Castrol is the naming rights sponsor for The Rugby Championship.
ARU boss John O’Neill and SANZAR CEO Greg Peters will announce the competition name and draw today in Sydney.
All sides will play each other home and away for a total of six Test matches. The Wallabies’ first of three Bledisloe Cup clashes with world champions New Zealand will begin The Rugby Championship in Sydney.
@ Scrumdown:28 – Europe will be better for them to base themselves. Though going to Oz and Nz from there is hellish. 24 hour flight. Crickey they will be buggered after that…….hahaha. Poor buggers won’t know what they got themselves into……hehehe.
Nah, think it is great for them to be in this tourney with us. For them to really benefit they should be playing SuperRugby. I know their players mostly play in France, but really if some could play in Oz/Nz and the Saffa conference they would benefit far more when they play as a National team. Anyhow they will be better off even without SuperRugby playing in this tourney for the next 4 years before the 2015 world cup.
25@ grootblousmile:
Tried to book after I spoke to you but all taken, so we’ll have to take the “thieving bag carrier route”.
Luckily it’s not too hard a walk.

34@ grootblousmile:
Only need 1 ball per round of golf!
Talk about 1 ball, I heard a strange statistic today. (Where’s superBull?)
Statistically all humans have an average of 1 testicle and 1 breast!
40 @ Scrumdown:
Well, let me schlepp my 2 balls and 2 tits off to the house….. hehehe
Think I’ll joim all the old farts in laying the head down.
Another LOOOOONG day tomorrow with a 04h30 start, and a school honours evening later. Sh1t why does this last kid have to get things right.
All of the others were just about average(1 ball and 1 breast?)and never had to attend.
You ou’s sleep too early
We sleep early ’cause we start early.
You know that in Africa when the cocks start crowing it’s time to start moving, or get eaten.
Hey GBS, I’m seriously thinking of going down to PE for the 7’s next month, how about applying for media accreditation?
Puma has (just like me) a seeeeeeeeeeeeriaaaaaaaaas case of lysdexic fingers!!!!
45 @ Scrumdown:
Good Idea…
Will contacts SA Rugby about 7’s Accreditation.
6@ Puma:
Hi Puma, thats an interesting schedule you’ve highlighted there and as you also mentioned in a post just above this that it will be odd to have a break in the Super 15 to fit in the incoming tour of England and not give the new Boks coach much time with his players. That could be a much more competitive series than I guess most SA punters are thinking it will especially if England appoint a good new coach soon, he will have chance to take them through the 6 nations earlier in the year so they could come over quite a strong team. But I guess the question is who will be their new coach will it be a new one or carry on with the same one? For Springboks sake hope they don’t get a quality new coach in, because I feel there is a lot of talent around and if England can get their management sorted and fix the problems the squad at the World Cup they can go places.
