Shane Williams has confirmed that he plans to end his international rugby career with Wales against Australia in Cardiff on December the 3rd.
Williams is Wales’ record try-scorer but had announced that he would hang up his international boots after the Rugby World Cup ended.
The 34-year-old has however decided that he wants to end his career in front of a home crowd at the Millennium stadium – if he is given the chance by Wales coach Warren Gatland.
“I am going to make myself available for this game. If selected, I want to play,” he told Wales on Sunday.
“If I am picked I will treat it in the same way I have always treated Wales games, but it will be a sad day for me. In fact, I’ll be devastated.
“But to bow out in front of Welsh fans and my family and friends would be like a dream.”
Eighty-six-cap Williams was a core member of the Wales Rugby World Cup squad that finished in fourth place in the Rugby World Cup.
During the Rugby World Cup he score three tries taking his international try scoring tally to 57.
Wales play Australia four times over the next 9 months and before the third place play off at the world cup Williams said that he was being persuaded to delay his retirement until the Wallabies visited the Millennium Stadium in December.
Williams will only retire from playing rugby as an international but will continue to play for his club the Ospreys who he has a contract with until the 2012-13 season.
Williams has insisted that he will not be tempted to extend his international career with Wales to the 2012 Six Nations Championship which starts in February.
“I always said I would know in myself when the time came to stop playing for Wales and that time is very nearly upon me,” said the 2009 International Rugby Board Player of the Year.
“After this last game in December, that’s definitely it for me, there’ll be no changing my mind.”
He proved that you’re never too small to be a great rugby player. Always a pleasure to watch
