It appears that alcohol has tarnished the better judgement of some South African rugby players after they admitted to taking a sign from outside a Matamata business.
A number of the Springboks allegedly stole a TAB sign from outside Trac Sports Bar after they visited the premises.
Bar owner, Gail Bailey, said at 2pm the players left and soon after a couple came in that had been in the shop next door to report on two men taking their sign and loading it into a white van.
“I ran out to the street and saw two of the men. I ran up to them, one with dark hair and a beard, one with blonde hair, and said ‘someone saw you nick my sign!'”
Mrs Bailey said she did not realise they were players at the time, but they had strong South African accents.
Both players she spoke to denied taking the sign, but she assured them that they had been seen.
After denying it a second time, she told them she would be calling the police to deal with the incident further.
“They then looked at me for a moment and said they will go and bring it back soon,” Mrs Bailey said.
“I told them, no I want it now!”
Mrs Bailey said she felt angry that they would want to take the sign.
“Nothing goes unnoticed in Matamata does it?” she said.
“They are rugby players here in our country – so how bad is that?”
She called ahead to Redoubt Bar and Eatery, another bar in Matamata, to warn them about the players on their way there.
Redoubt Bar and Eatery duty manager Christina Carter said the team stopped in for a few drinks after that.
“They were a bit mischievous while they were here but in high spirits. We were keeping a close eye on them though,” she said.
“They were really nice to the customers and didn’t complain about anything.”
Two players who were approached by the Matamata Chronicle for a photo after the incident, confirmed they were members of the Springboks team and one gave a false name calling himself the South African coach Peter de Villiers.
Springboks media manager Andy Colquhoun said he was unable to comment because he had to discuss the alleged incident with the team’s management.

Ja, that is what my head is saying, but my heart is with the Froggies.

Yip, would be good if the Frogs could win… but they obviously want the easier side of the draw, so it’s in their interests to thow the game
2nd Half On!
