Following a racially charged altercation with a fellow colleague of Jacaranda 94.2, the FM radio station, DJ and sports presenter Darren Scott resigned from the station and was subsequently given an indefinite leave of absence from SuperSport.

The sports broadcaster has today announced that the 2 parties (Scott and SuperSport) parted ways.

The following short statement appeared on the broadcaster’s web site today:

Representatives of SuperSport’s management met with Darren Scott (“Scott”) on Tuesday.

The meeting was amicable, with Scott expressing remorse and apologising for his recent conduct.

SuperSport and Scott agreed at the meeting to part ways.”

Neil Andrews and Peter Davies have taken over the presentation duties for the Rugby World Cup that were originally earmarked for Scott.

The story of what transpired according to Scott:

The altercation happened last Friday night during a team-building event at the Mabula Game Lodge in North West, but had been building for some time.

Scott said he had repeatedly leant money to a colleague, Africa Tshoaedi, but had never been paid back. In total, he had lent him about R6 000, the biggest single payment being R3 000.

“If he’d… acknowledged the debt and offered to pay it back, even just a few hundred rand a month, I would have told him not to worry. It got up my nose that he had subsequently bought a house and a car. But I must emphasise this is not an excuse. The fact remains that what I said, I said, and I don’t like myself for saying it.”

Scott and his team were at the lodge bar. Most of the crew had been drinking since early in the evening. At one point, Tshoaedi, who had also been drinking, came over to them. Scott said Tshoaedi was acting as if they were “lifelong mates”.

“I told him to leave. He stood there and smiled at me, so I told him to f**k off.” Tshoaedi left, but came back a while later.

“During that exchange, that’s when I used the k-word. Some of my team jumped in and tried to calm the situation. I got up and went to bed,” Scott said.

The next morning, he spoke to station managers and apologised.

“I tried to call Tshoaedi six or seven times. He told me afterwards that he didn’t feel like he wanted to talk to me at that stage.”

At a meeting between the two and the human resources department on Monday, Scott apologised. The two met privately afterwards and, again, Scott apologised.

“We shook hands and went our separate ways. That meeting ended very amicably.”

Jacaranda marketing manager Jenny Griesel said Tshoaedi did not want to comment on the incident.

“It’s true that there was that issue (the loans) in the background. Africa confirmed that an altercation did happen and the k-word was used on him. But he also said that the two did chat and cleared the air. He doesn’t hold any grudges,” she said.

Darren was an oke you could talk to in the Press Boxes that I’ve been to for the rugby games, did not think or act better than whomever spoke to him… unlike some other tossers in the Press boxes.

I forgive him the fact that he is a Sharks supporter…

Another exceptionally nice bloke is Louis de Villiers who writes for the Sport24 stable from Slaapstad… moer of a nice fella.

Me.

you can think what you want, but you can’t say what you want. That’s life in the good old RS of A

  • 10

If we said everything we thought, would that contribute to the South Africa we all want or not?

There is a time to talk and a time to shut up. A particularly good time to shut-up is after a few drinks. However, few get that right.

But Darren knew these things and so do we. It’s life skills 101.

I am pleased that he apologised.
