Springboks (15) 18 / All Blacks (5) 5 (Final Score)
The South African Springboks hosted the New Zealand All Blacks at Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium, Port Elizabeth at 17:05 SA Time. This was the match thread for discussion of the game. The match was broadcast live on SuperSport 1, SHD & M-Net on TV in SA.
Although the Springboks did not score a try, Morné Steyn’s boot was the difference… and all the Springboks worked hard enough, to really deserve the win!
The passion was back in the faces, the focus narrowed, the set phases were good and the breakdown battle was won by the Springboks.

Brussouw, what a player.
Oh fluck here comes CJ, expect the scrum to misfire.
manne manne ek se julle Bakkies lyk goed na 65 min, Broes briljant na 65 die nanne is aan die kom
kobus wieese is n box
n ref wat ons like DANKIE
Habana almost costing the Bokke a try with an attempted intercept….. eishhh
Habana steals a ball and hte Bokke get a penalty
Even though Steyn has scored all the points, and Brussouw has been excellent. Habana is my MOTM!
Penalty to the All Blacks, in their own half… they get their lineout, but then there is a forward pass
Less than 2 minutes left…. the Bokke WILL win!!
Bokke penalty…. less than a minute left
Ok well game over! BOKKE!
Bokke Winnnnn !!!
Damn, it was difficult keeping up with the site farking around like it did!
… but I’ll take that and a Bokke win, every day!
Good to see the Boks have won, hope it was a good game!
A 13-point win, well, well, well!
What was good was that the Bokke played to their strenghts….
aaagh fok ek kannie praat nie maar manne dis BEFOK BOK
Now we have to be careful… this was by far not the All Blacks best side…
It’s going to be very tough at the World Cup!
… at least it was’nt a Bokke white wash in the Tri-Nations….
Scotland 20 Italy 12 – 55 mins gone
Scotland 23 Italy 12 – 57 min
OK, autopsy of the Springboks performance….
Front row…. Full Marks… scrums and set phases were good, their all round defence awaesome!
Locks… the old firm of Bakkies and Victor were massive.
Loosies… Brussowwwwwwwwwwwwwww, Alberts and Spies was spot-on, and when Johnson came on he was solid
Scrummie… still not a faultless performance from Fourie du Preez, but solid. Hougie filled in well as a double-up scrummie at times… good combo
Flyhalf…. this is why we need Morné Steyn… Mr Ace kicker!
Centers…. For a change Jean was robust in attack and defence, Mossie Fourie was just awesome, saved the Bokke a number of times
Wings…. Habana was definately better, but he almost made me choke once when he went for the intercept and Toeava nearly scored. J P Pietersen was solid but not spectacular, but filled in well at fullback. Hougie is a little nuggety devil… go you good thing!
Fullback… Lambie was good for the few minutes he had, hope he is not injured badly.
Subs…. Beast was solid, John Smit was OK, but Bissie was miles better. CJ was OK, but Jannie is still the best option at tighthead. Danie Rossouw was not so good, but OK. Johnson did not stand back for anything.
There was passion from all the Springboks, their intensity was top notch…
Shows you what the Bokke are capable of from a platform where the forwards held their own and were even a bit dominant!
Worrying is the lack of chances to score and create tries.
The Bokke attacked the ground ball situations like they should ALWAYS do it…. I think we ruled the roost here, and that was where the game was won, where our penalties came from.
Dicipline was great.
There is NO SUBSTITUTE for an Ace Goal Kicker!
Can the Bokke get better… for sure they can!
…. and they HAVE TO!
Maybe the first few World Cup games is a blessing… but Wales first up will be difficult, hell so will Samoa and Fiji be too, the Namibian Test should be used to hone attacking skills and to perfect the game plan and structures.
Forget about run-away victories, I’ll be looking for good, solid victories, where we enforce our game plan and structures to perfection!
OK, now to the tactics of fielding a “B” side…. that is sooooo adverse to building momentum, it is’nt even funny.
One could see the All Blacks cohesion was lacking… it was clear as day, yet they were a real threat right throughout the match.
The All Blacks have the advantage that they can now field their strongest side again, against the Wallabies.
Their weakness lay at flyhalf…. and strangely their strong forwards pack were dominated by the Bokke forwards pack.
The World Cup Quarters, Semi’s and Final will be about defence… and ruling the roost at the breakdowns.

Thanks for the summary of players there Gbs. So all in all seems like a satisfactory performance from most of them.
The Springbok squad chose themselves today… and not many surprises should be expected.
Is there place for the rehabilitating Schalla? There is, but not as a starter.
Fullback is a worry, with Lambie injured and Frans Steyn injured last week… to my mind they should be the 2 fullbacks going over for the RWC.
I won’t have place for Ruan Pienaar in the match 22 but maybe in the broader squad, only because of his versatility, and I’ll take Butch only because Lambie will be there primarily as a fullback. Morne Steyn would be first choice though… we saw that today.
Centers is sorted, and Wynand Olivier won’t make my squad, whereas Juan de Jongh would.
Let’s go through, position by position:
The props are now sorted…. the guys who did duty today.
Hookers sorted, Bissie first and foremost, then Smit and Chiliboy.
Locks sorted… the guys who did duty today.
Loosies… largely sorted…. starters: Brussow, Alberts, Spies… with Johnson and Schalla in the broader squad.
Scrummies sorted… Fourie du Preez, Hougie.
Flyhalves sorted… Morné Steyn first and foremost, with Butch as backup.
Centers sorted… Jean de Villiers and Jaque Fourie… with Juan de Jongh as backup.
Wings sorted… Habana and JP Pietersen… with Hougie as good backup… and Mvovo as extra backup.
Fullbacks should be sorted….. Patrick Lambie and Frans Steyn… in that order
It leaves 3 players to make 30…. One lock, one loosie and maybe an extra scrummie…. Who fits the bill?
Johan Muller or Gerhard Mostert (not Flip van der Merwe), Jean Deysel and Ruan Pienaar, with Pienaar getting the nod for versatility only.
