Stephen Donald kicked a late penalty to seal an 11-16 Super Rugby victory over an unconvincing Blues team that has now lost three matches in a row.
When the teams met earlier this season the Blues edged the Chiefs 13-16 in Hamilton so the series between the teams ends as a draw.
The loss will have an big knock on effect on the Blues chances of reaching the Super Rugby play offs which start in three weeks time.
Both teams scored a try a piece and the difference between the teams came down to kicking but both Luke McAlister and Stephen Donald will want to forget the match as they both had shockers.
The result is a bonus for the Stormers and the Crusaders as the Stormers stay second and the Crusaders are now just two points behind the Blues.
Mathematically the Highlanders also come back into the equation.
The Chiefs victory was inspired by evergreen Tana Umaga and the 38-year-old’s first half try gave his team an early lead and confidence.
The loss leaves the Blues side in third place in the overall Super Rugby table, facing a blockbuster against the in-form Crusaders next week to potentially decide the winner of the New Zealand conference.
Blues skipper Jerome Kaino said his side ended up chasing the game after falling behind to Umaga’s try and were unable to break down a resolute Chiefs’ defence after the break.
“It’s really disappointing, the Chiefs came out to play tonight and pressured us and really deserved the win.”
Former All Blacks’ captain Umaga sidestepped the Blues’ defence in the 27th minute for a try which Stephen Donald converted to put the Chiefs ahead for the first time in the match.
Blues centre Jared Payne’s try three minutes after the break gave the home team some hope, but Luke McAlister’s wayward boot proved costly, as he squandered the conversion and four penalty attempts.
Chiefs captain Mils Muliaina said his side’s forwards were instrumental in defending a narrow 7-6 half-time lead.
“Our set piece was right on the job, that’s where it all started,” he said.
“We got some front-foot ball, especially early on and I take my hat off to the boys.”

The Blues play the Crusaders next…. one of the 2 will lose, making it possible that the Bulls & Sharks could jump one of the 2 in the overall pecking order.
