The Sharks have named their team to face the Waratahs in what will be their final home game of the Super Rugby pool stages with John Smit as captain.

The Sharks have brought back John Smit and Keegan Daniel for this week’s match and Smit packs down at loosehead prop alongside Bismarck du Plessis and Eugene van Staden who comes in for Jannie du Plessis.

Smit will provide cover at prop and hooker and Wiehahn Herbst is named on the bench as further front row cover.

The second row of Alistair Hargreaves and Steven Sykes remains intact with Sykes playing in his 50th Super Rugby game for The Sharks.

Keegan Daniel will start at eighth man, giving Willem Alberts a break, the big loose-forward having started all 12 games to date.

In other changes, scrumhalf Conrad Hoffmann will also allow another player with a heavy workload, Charl McLeod, to get a break, having been named to start his first game.

The loss of Ndungane means Lwazi Mvovo will wear the number 11 jersey and Riaan Swanepoel and Jacques-Louis Potgieter add depth to the backline off the bench.

The Sharks play the Cheetahs in Bloemfontein next week. They have a match against the Lions in Johannesburg in Round 17 and then their final match in the regular season is against the Bulls in Pretoria.

2 Responses to Sharks team – Alberts out, Barney in at prop

Poor Alberts and Beast getting the beating for a whole Sharks forwards pack who was not up to scratch.

With Doc Jannie out injured, I would have used Barney at tight head (not that I think he is a good prop) and I would have kept Beast at loosehead.

I would also have gone for a different loosie combo… Botes would have been the guy I would have benched and I would have played Keegan Daniel at openside, Jean Deysel at blindside & Alberts at No 8… or Deysel at openside, Alberts at blindside and Daniel at No 8. If it is only about giving Alberts a rest… fine and well.

Waratahs have a strong pack… in Ozzie terms…
