South Africa’s World Cup-winning coach Jake White has been appointed as the coach of Australia’s ACT Brumbies Super Rugby team.

White will take over from Tony Rea, installed as interim head coach following the sacking in March of Andy Friend, at the end of the current campaign.

“He was an absolute standout in the interview process,” Brumbies chief executive Andrew Fagan said of White, 48.

“He was thoroughly prepared and had obviously thought long and hard about his vision for the team and the organisation.

“His record says that he is one of the best coaches in world rugby and we’re delighted that he has agreed to join us in Canberra.

” White, who led South Africa to the 2007 World Cup title, had a 67 percent success rate from his 54 internationals as Springboks coach from 2004.

“The Brumbies are one of the great teams of world rugby,” said White, who also won the 2004 Tri-Nations title with South Africa.

“I have followed them closely for many years, particularly since striking up a close friendship with former head coach Eddie Jones.

“I’m looking forward to taking charge of the team and working with the players, the administration and most importantly our supporters, to develop a team that will be competitive every time we step out onto the field.”

His first battle will be attempting to retain Wallabies skipper Rocky Elsom with the NSW Waratahs reportedly interested in bringing the forward back to Sydney in 2012. The Brumbies, Australia’s only successful Super Rugby franchise, with titles in 2001 and 2004, currently sit 10th in the Super 15 with just two wins from eight matches.

Now lets us all [and particularly his haters] give him a chance to prove his ability as a coach!

will watch with eyes wide open. enjoy the ride Jake. Would have loved to see you as the Lions head coach.

  • 3

Well, let’s see if Jake can embrace a game where running lines and creative attack is the order of the day, rather than stoid defence and pattern play!

    Go Jakey the Snakey!

What are the odds that Jake will rope in Eddie Jones as an assistent coach…..

So another good man gone overseas…..hope you are taking surfing lessons Jake, Ozzie temperament and pastimes are the same as Natal…..you will enjoy it there.
Look to the Brumbies being more conservative in future with fitness being the main driver.

Jake White wants to restore the ”Brumbies rugby aura” and reintroduce an unpredictable, attacking style when he takes over as ACT coach.

White has been given four years to build his team and end the Brumbies’ Super Rugby finals drought. But with his resume already bulging with impressive achievements, White will not settle for mediocrity; he will seek immediate success.

”The last thing people want to hear is me saying, ‘Give me four years and judge me then’,” White said. ”I think the quicker we get things right, the better.

    @ Loosehead:
He was with former ACT mentor Eddie Jones when the news first broke and White said talking to Jones convinced him that joining the Brumbies was the perfect opportunity for a new challenge.

    but
i must add, it wouldve been a good joke if you could get your fellow blue bull supporters to understand it, hehehehe

btw, by mentioning the bulls/stormers clash of 11 june,
doesnt mean that i’m underestimating the sharks clash of this weekend
    ..
on the contrary i think the sharks will go into this match as favourates despite the stormers being above them on the log
    AND
the fact that the stormers won the last clash
    ..
will most propably go for the sharks on superbru,
    that is,
if my heart dont convince me otherwise (as usual)!!
