The match officials for Week 4 of the 2011 SANZAR Super Rugby tournament have been confirmed by SANZAR with two late changes to the original schedule.

Chris Pollock will take charge of the match between the Rebels and the Sharks in Melbourne whilst Steve Walsh will referee the match between the Stormers and the Highlanders in Cape Town. Both fixtures will be played on Friday 11 March 2011.

SANZAR Game Manager, Lyndon Bray said the appointment was changed as Walsh, who is returning from injury, is on his way to Europe to referee a Six Nations Test the following week. He replaces Mark Lawrence.

WTF? Marius Jonker flies halfway round the world to referee a NZ derby, and Keith Brown flies the other way to ref’ a SA derby.

Are these morons collecting air miles into a collective pool?

I can just see the frustration levels in Bloem’ on Saturday.

@ Scrumdown:1 – Scrumdown, have to agree with you. This is so damn stupid and really what a waste of money on air fair? This was really crazy this. In a local derby we should just have our own, oz, nz and sa. Wasting money on refs flying over here and there for nothing really.

This whole thing about the referees bothers me…

This weekend we saw one Assistant Super Rugby Referee, who until quite recently played flyhalf in New Zealand and then for a little stint in the UK… Glen Jackson… he played a lot of Super 14 in his time…

Anyway, would be good to see more ex-players of quality enter the refereeing ranks, they should have a far better feel for the game in general… and if is is an ex-forward to boot, we should have a dramatically better understanding of the scrums, breakdowns ect.

An ex-player should have a distinctly better understanding of when it’s possible to roll away as tackler in a ruck too, to name another example.

One feels that current referees, to a large extent, never played the game competatively and I often apply the same addage to them as Proffessors at Varsity, where the saying goes that “those who do not succeed in the real world practise, teach”…. I suppose one can often say “those who could not play rugby professionally, now referee”.

In 2011 we’ve seen some terrible refereeing up to now.

Referees are there to be facilitators of the game, not stamp their authority on a game!

    @ grootblousmile:
What really worries me is that a top ref’ like Kaplan seems suddenly to have such a k@k attitude whenever a captain wants to speak to him about any decisions, it seem’s almost as if he’s decided he is bigger than the players.

While I agree it’s important for the ref’ to control the game with discipline it is also not good when he/she alienates him/herself from the players.

I personally hate to watch games that Kaplan blows these days.
