Botha was cited for a dangerous tackle on Stormers scrumhalf Dewald Duwenhage in the first half which left the scrumhalf dazed for a while and unable to continue.

However Duwenhage took a few minutes, but returned to claim the man of the match award as the Stormers ground out their first victory at Loftus Versfeld since 2003 against the defending champions.

The referee, New Zealander Keith Brown saw the incident but decided it wasn’t worth penalising. However, SANZAR decided to cite Botha for the incident afterwards.

The big lock now faces the danger of being banned for a large portion of the Vodacom Super Rugby tournament, especially as he is seen as a habitual offender who has been on the wrong side of the disciplinary laws before.

Botha’s physical approach is one of the hallmarks of his play, but every now and again he oversteps the line.

Last year he was banned for nine weeks after he headbutted All Black scrumhalf Jimmy Cowan in the Tri Nations test in Auckland. He was also on the receiving end of a ban twice for illegally cleaning a ruck – first against the British and Irish Lions and the second time against Western Province in 2009.

Botha’s hearing is likely to be on Tuesday, but SANZAR will confirm it overnight from their Sydney office.

I’m not going to comment on this, because whatever I say, I’ll be accused of all sorts of evil things, I’m rather going to quote the Oompie sitting next to me on Loftus when they showed the incident on the big screens….

“Daarsy Bakkies, breek die klein fokker se nek!”

    …enough said…

    @ The Saint:

    @ The Saint:

Well, its yet another incident involving Botha and someone half his size.

    Doesn’t learn does he?

As for the Blue Machine – has it hit a bearing?

    @ Pam Anderson:
Pam how tall are you? I am 1.92 m , small compared to International locks. When the All Blacks visited the Hoedspruit air force base in 1995 during the WC i walked next to the AB locks , it was awkward to look up when talking to them. Imagine the size diff between Bakkies and Dewalt. Like i said i have not seen the incident but being tall is a necessity in certain positions, so i really hope Bakkies, for South Africas WC sake is not guilty , we need him , believe me.

Maybe the struggle of the Bulls might just motivate the Irons of Springbok rugby to peak at the right time.

Super – you miss the point.

It may make a difference when executing a tackle in the classic sense, but when the opponent is bent over at the base of the ruck it doesn’t really matter.

In Cowan’s case him being shorter than Bakkies had nothing to do with the headbutt, nor his charge on Aplon or manhandling of Duvenage.

Its just plain foul play and he doesn’t learn, and as numeroud people point out he does it to the little guys mostly – why doesn’t he try it on a Alberts, Bekker, etc?

    @ Pam Anderson:
ag ok i miss your point, no more intimidating , no more hard men, no more meanies…. the game has changed. Soon we will see oscar dives, guys rolling around in pain until the ref penalize the other team. the new game , all so squeaky clean….

    @ superBul:

I agree, you are definitely missing the point.

This is cr*p. Its like when Brian Baronet got killed in the boxing ring and they wanted to ban boxing. People know what rugby is and it can be dangerous….I never played seriously because of my temper. Bakkies is what he is. I actually thought the tackle was hard but not dangerous….I must have another look, I was surprised to see in the news this morning that Bakkies was cited. South Africa’s physicality is what makes the difference internationally….theya re trying to take away our best punch JMHO.
