Rebels (0) 0 / Waratahs (10) 43 (Final Score)
The Melbourne Rebels, the debutant team of the Super Rugby Series, hosted the Waratahs at AAMI Park, Melbourne at 19:40 AEDT (10:40 SA Time). This was the match thread for discussion of the game. The match was broadcast live on SuperSport 1, SHD & CSN on TV in SA.
After a slow start by the Waratahs they just got better and better… or is it that the Rebels fell away more and more…. resulting in a scoreless sheet for the Rebels against 7 tries by the Waratahs.
Not a good debut for the Rebels at all.

Welcome to the realm of SUPER Rugby to the debutants, the Melbourne Rebels. They haven’t kicked a ball in anger as yet, and they have already sold 7,000 memberships and have reached an important milestone at a trial match with over 30,000 tickets sold – and that is in the heartland of Australian Rules football! Excellent beginning.
Coach Rod McQueen is the past master at establishing successful rugby franchises – he set up the Brumbies back in year dot. Culture is at the heart of his thinking, culture being a club’s values and beliefs. He’s already at it, with his explanation during the week that the name REBEL stands for:
Respect
Excellence
Balance
Ethos
Leadership
Best of luck to the new franchise; may they experience success in their first year and go on to big things in the future, to the benefit of Australian and SH rugby.
I’m off to the local pub with the better half, for a beer and a steak and the opportunity to enjoy the season kick-off on the big screen with the boys from the local rugby club. Catch you all when I get back, after what I hope will be a winning first match for the Waratahs.
