A rib injury to Vodacom Bulls fullback, Zane Kirchner, blotted a perfect evening for his team’s 68-5 victory over the Pumas in Mbombela Stadium in Nelspruit on Saturday.

Official Bulls web site

Kirchner suffered cartilage damage to his ribs and left the field shortly after halftime. He will have X-rays taken on Monday to determine the extent of the injury.

Bulls team doctor Org Strauss said he fears for some bad news.

“The best thing will be to examine him properly on Monday,” said Strauss, “but he may be out of action for several weeks.” Bakkies Botha (knee) was the only other player that required treatment on the field, but Strauss had better news in this regard.

“Bakkies twisted his knee and is not too serious. He will probably have to rest a few days.” Flip van der Merwe (ankle) and Jaco Pretorius (back) will run with the team this week, but Francois Hougaard is still inactive. “Francois Hougaard still has to wear a cast this week, but his stress fracture is recovering well. A second scan of Victor Matfield’s neck also proved that he will definitely be available for the run-on side against the Lions.”

Is Bakkies Botha the new Joe Van Niekerk when it comes to injuries?

It will be a decade and then some since Jaco van der Westhuyzen first played Super Rugby and it is exactly that type of experience that adds to his value at the Bulls. Voted Super 12 Player of the Year in 2003, the utility back has also played in England and Japan before being drafted back into the Bulls squad in 2010.

    Oor Wynand
Wynand Olivier has consistently been one of the form midfielders in Super Rugby for the last couple of seasons. He backs up his incredible work rate with solid defence, good distribution skills and a strong running game. Olivier has the ability to secure go-forward ball, but also have the skills set to set those outside him alight, as shown in the 2010 season where the Bulls scored a record number of tries.

    Oor ons jong spelers

A classic outside centre with enough pace to play on the wing as well, Dippenaar made the most of his opportunities in 2010, playing in ten matches for the Bulls, including their semi-final win over the Crusaders. He will be looking to further improve his stocks this year and have a bright future ahead of him, with senior players calling it a day post World Cup.

Victor Matfield’s endorsement of Mtunzi Mabeta as the next good thing in Bulls rugby tells of the status the young American-born lock has in the Bulls squad and “Fudge”, as he is called, will be looking to put the proof of that out there in 2011. Athletic and mobile, the young lock is learning from the best and will be around for a long time to come.

    7 & 8@ superBul:

Ek weet baie van ons worry oor Morne se back up , nou lees die oor Brummer.

After kicking a dramatic match winning dropped goal in the last seconds of the 2010 Vodacom Cup final for the Blue Bulls, it became clear that Francois Brummer had the mental toughness to become an understudy to Morné Steyn in future Bulls teams. Still young and learning, Brummer has an impressive work ethic and trains very hard. He is quick, kicks well and as he matures, is becoming better at dominating games.
