Supersport Preview
A consistent South Africa will have a clear edge over the unpredictable West Indies in Thursday’s Group B match at the Feroz Shah Kotla Stadium.
One of the best teams never to have won a World Cup, South Africa’s aspirations could be gauged from the fact that they have packed three frontline spinners of different styles for the World Cup in the region where the tweakers thrive most.
At the same time, they have contemporary cricket’s deadliest pace pair in Dale Steyn and Morne Morkel, one who thrives on pace while the other prefers bounce to torment the batsmen.
“There is always a place for genuine pace. I don’t think anybody likes to face people who bowl at 155 kph. If someone tells you they enjoy it, they are lying to you,” skipper Graeme Smith said.
They have a formidable line-up with Jacques Kallis and Hashim Amla as the batting mainstays.
In contrast, twice champions West Indies lack the depth or variety of their opponents but in Chris Gayle, they have a player who can turn a game on its head on his day.
@ Puma:
ah…the man is back….where u been?
Partnership 51 runs, 9.1 overs, RR: 5.56 (Smith 20, de Villiers 31)
This pitch is not easy
Back now.
Pleased to see we have not lost another wicket. Going a bit slow, but that is fine, just not to lose another wicket.
@ superBul:213 – Thought as much Super. We struggle out there, but no other wicket has gone. That is fine, just keep taking the ones. We have enough overs left. Most important now not to lose a wicket.
I’ll go watch on the glass arsehole.
@ 4man:211 – Howzit 4man. I have been around..hahaha. How you doing mate?
@ Puma:
ah you just caught me, didnt think anyone wanted to talk to me. I’m fine thanks and u?
4man i am so busy updating the scores it is not easy to type a lot, but glad Puma caught you in time
So far just keeping above 4 an over…. that is fine… we need barely more than 4 as a required rate.
@ 4man:218 – I am well bud, just damn hot here. Are you getting any of the SuperRugby?
if this pair can take us to double digits to get i will feel more relaxed
@ grootblousmile:220 – We have plenty overs left gbs, just get the ones no need to hurry this. Just need to not lose a wicket. Then we will get home.
223@ Puma:
Yip, just slowly and securely, that’s all we need!
Tension shows on Smiths face , he really wants this WC.
@ grootblousmile Yeah, no need to rush this. We have some wickets in hand, just take the ones. No rush to the head stuff needed.
Going now to tv for a bit. Back in 10min.
@ superBul:225 – Think we all do Super. We should have one in 1999 had Donald run. Jeepers it was a long time back but it still hurts that.
End of over 22 (9 runs) South Africa 105/2 (118 runs required from 28 overs, RR: 4.77, RRR: 4.21)
Nice one AB, hits a 6 and gets his 50. We now have our double digit number. The mental barrier of a 100 is now over, will look easier from here.
@ Puma:
Not yet, but looking better
Partnership 100 runs, 19.4 overs, RR: 5.08 (Smith 40, de Villiers 60)
25 Overs left… and we’re almost into double figures needed… 100 to draw, 101 to win… in 25 overs… easy peasy it should be.
8 wickets left standing.
99 needed from 24 overs
Smith in this fighting mood is what you want from a captain. He is one Captain that won me over. I questioned his appointment but he is fast becoming one of the best in the world.
Need 99 to win, makes it look easier now. Though it looks damn tough out there to bat.
@ superBul:234 – For sure Super, agree.
Always remember him in Oz fighting the fight with that elbow, then the broken finger.
@ Puma:
236
it is seldom that i like n Cape sportsman lol
AB’s rate of scoring is impressive… hope he gets to 100
4 then 6 from AB
End of over 28 (12 runs) South Africa 138/2 (85 runs required from 22 overs, RR: 4.92, RRR: 3.86)
