Supersport Preview
A consistent South Africa will have a clear edge over the unpredictable West Indies in Thursday’s Group B match at the Feroz Shah Kotla Stadium.
One of the best teams never to have won a World Cup, South Africa’s aspirations could be gauged from the fact that they have packed three frontline spinners of different styles for the World Cup in the region where the tweakers thrive most.
At the same time, they have contemporary cricket’s deadliest pace pair in Dale Steyn and Morne Morkel, one who thrives on pace while the other prefers bounce to torment the batsmen.
“There is always a place for genuine pace. I don’t think anybody likes to face people who bowl at 155 kph. If someone tells you they enjoy it, they are lying to you,” skipper Graeme Smith said.
They have a formidable line-up with Jacques Kallis and Hashim Amla as the batting mainstays.
In contrast, twice champions West Indies lack the depth or variety of their opponents but in Chris Gayle, they have a player who can turn a game on its head on his day.
I hope we get this lot, it will make our lives easier going into the knock out stages.
Good luck Proteas. Should be a cracking game. Just bowl smart to Gayle.
Our lower order hitting and death bowling worries me but hopefully we have been working on that. Go Proteas.
@ Winston: Howzit Winnie, How you doing mate?
I hope we bowl well to Gayle, he could take it away in no time.
Really looking forward to this.
@ Puma:
Get him out early 🙂
@ Puma:
Not too bad, no news is good news, am just carrying on regardless 🙂 Been a bit quiet because work has been hetic, have moved into my own place etc so life has been busy these past 2 months or so 🙂
@ Winston:Did you watch the Dutch game? Jeepers I enjoyed them smashing England about. But knew England would win. Just hoped Holland could have.
Never even knew Doeschate was South African. Someone on sw told me.
How we lose such great players is terrible.
@ Winston:6 – Great to hear that Winston. Always better once you have your own place.
You can do what you want then…..haha.
You still enjoying Joburg? Must say with this humidity I miss Joburg some days.
@ Winston:3 – That worries me too a bit. Just hope our openers can do it. They make a good score then wont put too much pressure on the lower order.
More worried how we bowl to Gayle. He can win it for WI almost on his own, if he gets away. He is a dangerous batsman.
@ Puma:
i think he was only born in SA
@ superBul:10 – Super, From what I heard he was born and bred in Cape Town. When he won mom and spoke there. He still had a South African Accent. So can’t be that long in Holland. Think his grand father was Dutch. Or father. Not sure about it. But he don’t have any Dutch accent at all. Still very much South African.
Also when they interviewed Trot. He only has a South African Accent still. He so far has not picked up a English accent.
How we lose these gifted players, is a damn shame really.
@ Winston:5 – For sure Winston, we have to take Gayle early. Otherwise he can go on to make a huge score. Need to bowl really smart to him.
SuperBul, see you have a twin….hahahahaha. Two of you online there.. 🙂
@ Puma:
@ Puma:

@ superBul: 🙂

@ superBul:16 – Ja, you will catch my typo bug…hehehehe.
Good to be back. Now behave…..hehehehehehehe. 🙂
14.00 Toss Jeff Crowe, the match referee, hands the coin to Smith who tosses and Sammy calls wrong, South Africa to bowl.
South Africa team
GC Smith*, HM Amla, JH Kallis, AB de Villiers†, JP Duminy, F du Plessis, J Botha, RJ Peterson, M Morkel, DW Steyn, Imran Tahir
West Indies team
CH Gayle, DS Smith, DM Bravo, RR Sarwan, S Chanderpaul, DJ Bravo, KA Pollard, DJG Sammy*, DC Thomas†, KAJ Roach, SJ Benn
“It would have been a good toss to lose,” Smith says a touch sheepishly.
Big news is that South Africa will play three spinners, that means the much-hyped Imran Tahir will make his debut today. Smith adds that West Indies are a good competition side because of the impact players.
@ superBul:18 – Hope it is a good thing. We need to bowl well here Super.
Let’s GO PROTEAS. 🙂
Blue Bird see you up there. Thought you would be sweating on your bike this morning….hehehehe.
How you doing? You ready for the Argus? Feel excited for you. Hope all goes well.
When was the last time the Proteas had 5 spinners available?” Never I’d think.
@ Puma:
I would have felt so much more comfortable if Mark Boucher was there today.
@ superBul:25 – Super, I would have too. You know how much I always supported Bouch. He is always good for 30 or even 50 down the order. Our street fighter. I miss him keeping.
@ superBul:24 – NEVER. Not that I can think of, but think never.
A very good morning to you superBul, Puma and GBS, looks like you have some cricket to look forward to today…
Hey Puma, what did I see the other day….You DELIGHTING in Englands struggle against the Dutch team!! 😆
@ superBul:20 – HEEEEHAAAAAAA.. Can’t wait to see Tahir at this level.
See GBS has got around to removing the ‘Christmas Braai’ adverts at last, boy oh boy Swanni Braai got their money’s worth there!! 🙂
