India tour of South Africa, 2nd ODI:

India 190 (47.2 ov)

South Africa 189 (42.5 0v)

India win by 1 run

Pitch and conditions

Overcast conditions prevail at Johannesburg and the forecasts predict 72% chance of rain on the match day. The Wanderers pitch has always had some bounce on offer and it will be interesting to see if the overcast conditions persist and assist in seam movement.

Team news

India are likely to go in with three seamers and Harbhajan. It will be interesting to see if they bring in Sreesanth, who featured in the Test series, for this game. They are likely to give Yusuf a run but he might come in from the third ODI on pitches that will have less bounce.

India (possible): 1 Sachin Tendulkar, 2 M Vijay, 3 Virat Kohli, 4 Yuvraj Singh, 5 Suresh Raina, 6 Rohit Sharma, 7 MS Dhoni (capt & wk), 8 Harbhajan Singh, 9 Munaf Patel, 10 Zaheer Khan, 11 Ashish Nehra

Will the overcast conditions tempt South Africa to retain the same playing eleven or will they bring in allrounder Faf du Plessis?

South Africa (possible): 1 Graeme Smith (capt), 2 Hashim Amla, 3 Colin Ingram, 4 AB de Villiers (wk), 5 JP Duminy, 6 David Miller, 7 Johan Botha, 8 Dale Steyn, 9 Morne Morkel, 10 and 11 Any two from Wayne Parnell, Lonwabo Tsotsobe, and Faf du Plessis might get a go.

Stats and trivia

  • Raina has just one half-century from the last 17 ODIs. It’s not his longest barren patch, though. From April 2006 to June 2008, he went through 19 innings without a fifty.
  • de Villiers’ 76 was the highest ODI score by a South African wicketkeeper against India. The previous best was Mark Boucher’s 68 in 2000.
  • de Villiers also became the 10th South African batsman to tally more than 500 ODI runs against India.
  • Tendulkar is set to join Sanath Jayasuriya as most capped ODI players (444 games). However, he is set to become the cricketer who has played the most ODI innings. This will be his 433rd innings, and he will go past Jayasuriya who played 432 innings.

Pitch report: Shaun Pollock says there will be some swing on offer. Pollock: “There are cracks but it won’t have any effect. There is a decent grass covering but its all dry. Not green. I don’t see much activity for the bowlers. The teams batting second will find that the ball comes on better here and good to bat.”
Toss: India won and have chosen to bat
Dhoni “We want to put some runs on the board. It looks like a good track. There might be some swing early but it will become good for batting after that. We really can’t go behind the series by the margin of two games; so this is a crucial game. Normally we have seen that 270 is a good total on this track.”
Smith: “The weather might come into play. Hopefully the bowlers can produce a effort like the last evening. Durban was terrific for us.”
Both teams have retained the same playing elevens.

Sourav Ganguly was at the Aaj Tak studio, a hindi news channel: I am paraphrasing him here, not exact quotes but something close to this. “You can always get bowled out cheaply. this is a game and that’s the way it goes sometimes. What was missing, though, was self belief and positive intent. They seemed to lack confidence. I have doubts about the ability of some of the batsmen to play on these tracks. Suresh Raina seems to be forever expecting the short ball; he was so back inside the crease and got out to a full delivery. Rohit Sharma … well the selectors must look at few other players who have scored well in domestic cricket. M Vijay seems to be out of form. Tendulkar has had a long break from ODIs yes and he has to put that out of his mind. He has to return to his natural attacking ways. He has to put out of his mind the fact that this is a young team and depends too much on him. The pressure on these youngsters will lift if he bats positively and puts the pressure back on the bowlers. Hopefully, in the next few games we will see that.”.

Gee quite a low total by India, shouldn’t be too hard for SA to cruise this one.

  • 10

Hi there superBul see you back on again, hows it going ou pel? Another good bowling effort from Tsotsobe. Reading through your dismissal list looks as if India will be kicking themselves at a lot of their dismissals.

Oh dear I was just about to post that I was surprised to see de Villiers come in and that I thought they may have promoted Miller to try and give him as much time as possible to bat and build more experience. Not looking so simple now, oh well Smith is overdue a big score so he will have to do it tonight.

    @ Bullscot:
Hi Scott , i am doing great thanks, we have water all over the planet. So far nice here since last night we had 140mm but no problem yet, the Olifants river is in flood so you will here soon about the people of Mozambique in trouble.

    @ superBul:
Sounds like its quite wet there, thats a lot of rain in a day hopefully it doesn’t get much more and cause you any problems, I read there was flooding around Upington and Gauteng was on a flood watch as well, so its quite widespread it seems.
The required run rate is still well under 4, but as you say these low scores are better dealt with swiftly, get it over and done with. Just another wicket or two and then it could get close, Smith may be the man to bat through now he’s in and let the others attack.

Wonder if the selectors will use this as a wake up call. We needed Albie Morkell in the team, from the moment it was clear that Jacques Kallis was injured they should have re-called him.

  • 26

    Commentary on Cricinfo-

In the absence of Jacques Kallis, South Africa are carrying a long tail and it has cost them today. The critics will bay for blood. They will scream that SA have choked again. India have bounced back yet again. It’s 1-1. Phew. When Smith fell, after taking the batting Powerplay, it was 152 for 5. 189 all out.

  • 27

Munaf Patel, is the man of the match.

  • 28

Munaf Patel is the man of the match: “I was just thinking about slower ones in the end. Crowd from my village are here and I was under pressure! They will now come to my hotel after the game! (smiles). I have worked hard on my fitness with Ramji and have bowled a lot in the nets here.”
Dhoni: “It’s a big win for us. We were short of 40-45 runs. We got a slow but a good start. Yuvraj got out just before we were about to take the powerplay. Then we had to postpone it. Then when we took it, Raina fell first ball. Harbhjan’s role was crucial. When Bhaji came they decided not to take him on and lost a bit of momentum . Munaf has been bowling well for us in the last 10-20 games he has played. The part-timers also have bowled well. Yuvraj is our main batsman at no 4. He can dictate terms. Once he crosses 10-15 runs, you can see that he bats fantastically. Two gone, three more to go; we are expecting some tough cricket.”

  • 29

Smith “Congrats MS and his team. We played some good cricket for 70 overs but our game in the back end wasn’t good enough. We now have to regroup. I would have liked to be there a little longer. Couple of soft dismissals, bad decision making and … The pitch was slow and stopped a bit .. shot making was difficult. Credit to India. Tsotsobe bowled incredibly well. Unfortunately we weren’t good enough to get over the line.”

My word what a shock result! The last time managed to catch a glimpse of the score we needed 50 off 20 overs I think with 6 wickets still in hand, what on earth happened. Its ok to have batsmen who can bash 20 or 30 odd runs in 20 over cricket but with 50 overs being a lot longer you need quality batsmen who would expect to get 50+ at least every 2nd or 3rd innings. I’m sure the batsmen are there just not being picked, I guess at a time like this you appreciate the value of Mark Boucher. But if he is not going to be picked again think that Morne v Wyk must get a look in he’s a good bat and it also takes de Villiers away from the keeping let him concentrate on batting and have his brilliant fielding available. Why has vd Merwe fallen out of favour? Hope Kallis is ready for the World Cup!
