And that will be it on the first day of this much-anticipated series. It was Steyn and Morkel against the Indian batting line-up, and the duo have won the first round, taking seven wickets between them. India have limped to 136 for 9. 50 of those runs have come off Lonwabo Tsotsobe, and the ineffectiveness of the third seamer has been the only worry for South Africa on what has otherwise been a perfect day for them. MS Dhoni has gritted it out in the middle, but 150-175 does not look to be par for this surface, which has nothing alarming about it. But you never know.

Venter told Sky Sports on Thursday that he had modelled his behaviour on the soccer-inspired satirical film “Mike Bassett: England Manager”, which had been shown on the Saracens’ team bus on a trip to Gloucester earlier in the season.

“Everybody’s seen it for what it was, which was a joke,” Venter said. “It wasn’t meant to offend anybody. Maybe a bit of passive resistance in a way.

“I do respect them (the rugby authorities). I wouldn’t want to offend them deliberately. So I definitely wouldn’t do it again”.

The former World Cup winner was fined 21,850 pounds ($34,090) last month, with 13,100 pounds suspended to 2012, after being found guilty of misconduct by the ERC for criticising a referee.

“Look, I agree I’ve got a mischevious streak in me,” Venter told the Daily Mirror newspaper. “But that’s because life is a privilege to live.

“There are a lot more serious things out there than rugby. It is a game. It is not life and death. I didn’t insult anybody and nobody got hurt.”

Ponting, who has refused to drop down the order from No.3, has just 82 runs for the series at 20.50 and he went into the match without a century in his previous eight Tests.

Including Thursday’s innings, he is averaging 31.53 in his last nine Tests, more than 20 down on his career mark of 54.08.

Ponting himself admitted this week his future as captain was uncertain, with the Tasmanian facing the potential ignominy of becoming the first Australian skipper to lose three Ashes series, and his batting slump is only adding to the pressure.

Ponting’s long-time heir apparent, Clarke, is faring even worse.

He made just four before limply hanging his bat outside off-stump and being caught behind off Tremlett.

The 29-year-old has reached doubles figures just once in the series, and his last eight Test innings have yielded just 130 runs at 16.25, including his 80 in the second innings of the second Test in Adelaide.

Johnson to Cook, OUT, 138.6 kph, gone! There’s the breakthrough for Australia and it goes to Johnson. Full outside off, brings Cook into the drive and it flies low to gully where Hussey picks up a good low catch

  • 296

Johnson strikes again. Full on off stump, hint of swing back into the right hander and that’s plumb. A brief stay for Trott, superb stuff from Mitchell.

    From 78/0 to 82/3

Johnston 3 wickets for 21 off 7 overs

  • 298

Strauss is gone! An edge behind and Haddin takes the straightforward catch! That was just a good line and length – across Strauss and with the swing that has been around he felt he had to play

  • 299

Morning Super. Johnson is on fire this morning.

  • 300

Yesterday said this is a good score, just wonder if one of the England lower order can do what Haddin and Mitchel Johnston did?

England have their work cut out now to survive. More than 10 overs to face until stumps.
Australia posted a good score at the end. 268 is not bad at all.
