15 Zane Kirchner:
Took a decent up and under but struggled at other times and kicked away possession (43% of ball he got) along with most. Didn’t make a pass all game but did gain 70m with ball in hand.

14 Gio Aplon:
After a great game last week, he had a shocker. Turned the ball over all 3 times he got it after an early break.

13 Frans Steyn:
Kicked the ball away at a crucial time and missed his only kick at goal. Why he stayed on for the full game whilst Adi Jacobs got splinters is anyone’s guess.

12 Jean de Villiers:
Crashed it up without making any metres at all and conceded a crucial penalty. Lacking form.

11 Lwazi Mvovo:
Best tackle stats along with Bismarck on the day with 11. Lost the ball in contact twice but without much support from his mates. Strong with ball in hand.

10 Morné Steyn:
Missed an early kick at goal. Doesn’t look like the Vintage Steyn of 2009. Where has he gone? Also guilty of handing the ball back to the Scots with poor kicking.

9 François Hougaard:
Harassed the Scottish No.9 a few times at scrum time, looked decent but suffered from kickitis at times, it must be catching.

8 Ryan Kankowski:
Was strong with ball in hand making 33m and handling the ball 15 times which was the most by any Bok forward in both departments. Ran out of support after a good run and kick gather. Decent performance in conditions that don’t normally favour his game.

7 Juan Smith:
Tried hard as always. Harshly penalised by Dickenson and gave away a crucial penalty.

6 Deon Stegmann:
One good turnover and penalised for one. Should have showed up more in a game where he was outdown by the Scottish No.7.

5 Victor Matfield (captain):
Lost his rag with Stuey Dickenson which one wouldn’t expect from someone as experienced as Victor. Boks lost 3 lineouts on the night, did Victor play his part in that? Why on earth he asked Pienaar to hoist a kick with 3 minutes on the clock is a bigger mystery than the Arms deal?

4 Bakkies Botha:
The ‘new’ Bakkies showed composure and put in some decent hits. Not up to the form we all know he is capable off but a decent run.

3 Jannie du Plessis:
Conceded 3 penalties in the scrums. Poor game by Jannie who is much better than this display. Moore was spot on criticizing Jannie’s bind. He needs to work on that.

2 Bismarck du Plessis:
Worked hard and also topped the tackle count with Mvovo with 11 as well as handling the ball 9 times. Conceded 2 penalities though including one for punching which was crucial and swung the momentum to the Scots. Discipline continues to let him down. Can also take some blame for the 3 lineout losses (although I counted 4). His wayward throw led to an Alberts try thank god!

1 Tendai Mtawarira:
Penalised once but held up to the much talked about Murray and put him under pressure at times resulting in the Scots loosing 3 of their own scrums. Quieter than usual with ball in hand though only handling 3 times.

Showed some of his trademark powerful runs and scooped a wayward lineout throw to score the Boks only try with a strong drive. Must start.

20 Ruan Pienaar (on for Hougaard, 47th min):
Pathetic. Kicked more than the man he replaced. And badly too.

21 Patrick Lambie (on for Morné Steyn, 64th min):
Missed another easy kick. Someone please sort out this kid’s kicking, but why he is handed the kicking duties when the experienced duo of Frans Steyn and Ruan Pienaar are on the park is questionable. Handled the ball once in 16 minutes which showed who had the ball in the final quarter.

22 Adi Jacobs:
Not used. A bench ornament? Why have him on the bench if you are not going to use him? He may have been the man capable of sparking something but we will never know.

Coaching Staff: PDV, Dick Muir and Gary Gold

Tactically inept. After 40 minutes of trying something to send the team back on to do more of the same has to be blamed at the men who supposedly run the show. Losing to a poor Scottish side must rank alongside some of our worst defeats in the last 5 years. The slating of Stu Dickenson post match shows the unwillingness to accept any reponsibility for defeat.

Unlike last week, I agreed with Pitbull on his criticism of the Boks. He was sadly spot on.

15: Zane Kirchner – 3.5

Kirchner had a howler at the back – unreliable under the high ball, unimaginative on the counter-attack, kicked possession away on a rare attacking opportunity and capped off his performance with a blatant shoulder charge that he will surely be cited for.

14: Gio Aplon – 4.5

Had precious little to do. Showed heart on defence again.

13: Frans Steyn – 5

Arguably the best of a bad bunch in the backline due to his urgency on defence.

12: Jean de Villiers – 4

De Villiers has had a poor tour overall and his midfield combination with Steyn is not working.

11: Lwazi Mvovo – 4.5

Was the most threatening runner in Green and Gold but his positional play was nonexistent.

10: Morne Steyn – 4

Steyn’s tactical kicking was poor but he remains the Boks’ best option at No 10 in European conditions.

9: Francois Hougaard – 3

Hougaard had a shocker. His box kicks – bar one, which Kankowski plucked out of the air in the most promising attacking play by the Boks in the first half – were terrible, and he failed to provide any momentum from the base.

8: Ryan Kankowski – 6

Kankowski was the best Bok on the park at Murrayfield, which says little in terms of the team’s horrendous performance, but should be noted for a player not suited for wet conditions. He was committed on defence and carried the ball up willingly.

7: Juan Smith – 4.5

Did some hard donkey work but made a couple of basic errors.

6: Deon Stegmann – 3

Third Test, third flop. Not ready for international rugby and has surely had his last start on tour.

5: Victor Matfield – 4

Tried his best to reason with controversial referee Stuart Dickinson and his decision to turn down the three points resulted in the only try of the match, but he failed in his primary objective of gaining ascendancy in the lineouts.

4: Bakkies Botha – 3.5

The Botha of old would have revelled in such a forwards-orientated, physical affair. Sadly, the Botha we saw in Edinburgh had very little impact up front.

3: Jannie du Plessis – 3.5

His suspect handling again came to the fore in the challenging conditions and the scrums were a lottery.

2: Bismarck du Plessis – 4

Another sub-par performer but again, he remains the Boks’ best option against England next week.

1: Tendai Mtawarira – 4

Slipped off tackles and was tackled back.

Replacements:

16: Adriaan Strauss

Not enough time to be rated.

17: CJ van der Linde

Not enough time to be rated.

18: Flip van der Merwe – 5

Made a solid impact and deserves a start next week.

19: Willem Alberts – 5.5

Accomplished more in his powerful, try-scoring cameo than most of the starters in the pack combined. Alberts not starting next week would be inexplicable.

20: Ruan Pienaar – 4

Had little to live up to following Hougaard’s stinker and still barely stuttered to a slightly better performance. Enough to start next week though.

21: Pat Lambie – 4

Peter de Villiers has shown time and time again this year that he will not tamper with Jake White’s game plan of 2004-2007. Lambie doesn’t fit into such game plan nor is he suited for northern hemisphere conditions and missed another relatively easy kick at goal.
