Geordan Murphy will captain Leicester Tigers in their clash with Australia at Welford Road on Tuesday night at 7.30pm (21:30 SA Time).

It appears that the match is NOT BROADCAST on TV in SA.

Following last season’s historic victory over South Africa, Tigers host the Wallabies, the two-time world champions, in the second game of their European tour.

Tigers director of rugby Richard Cockerill has named ten internationals in his squad, including club captain Murphy.

England internationals George Chuter, Julian White and Jordan Crane are included in the pack while Anthony Allen is at centre and Dan Hipkiss is named among the replacements.

All Blacks Scott Hamilton and Craig Newby are also selected and Tonga international Steve Mafi takes his place on the bench.

Peter Bucknall will make his first start for Tigers. The replacements include Argentinean prop Gaston de Robertis, a short-term signing in the absence Boris Stankovich who suffered a fractured eye socket in the win over Bath last month.

The 30-year-old de Robertis, capped three times by the Pumas, has previous experience in Europe with spells at Amatori Catania and Benetton Treviso in Italy, and at Biarritz in France, as well as playing in South Africa with Western Province.

Cockerill said: “Both sides will go out to play and make it an entertaining and really enjoyable night for everybody.

“We’ve got a lot to live up to after last year’s win over South Africa. It’s a great occasion and it sums up where we are in the world of rugby that we can get this fixture. We will try to have a crack at them and have a really good night.”

Tigers will turn back the clock by wearing lettered shirts for the match. Tigers were famous for their lettered shirts – including the ABC front row – up to the final years of the 20th Century when all clubs were requested to use numbers in the early years of professionalism.

The lettered shirts are to be sold after the match with the proceeds going to worthy causes.

Cockerill said: “For everybody who wears the jersey, it is not their jersey, they just get to wear it for a short period of time. It is nice to see the letters on the shirts again and we all hope that everybody wearing it does it justice.”

Flyhalf Berrick Barnes will captain the Wallabies after he co-captained the Australian Barbarians with Stephen Hoiles against England in June and is one of nine players selected who were involved in the Wallabies’ 25-16 win over Wales at Millennium Stadium last night.

The Australian squad will feature all seven members of the Wallabies’ bench from the James Bevan Trophy Test – Barnes, Richard Brown, Luke Burgess, Huia Edmonds, Dean Mumm, James Slipper and Lachie Turner – while Test hooker Saia Faingaa and inside centre Matt Giteau have also been included in Tuesday night’s match after starting for the Wallabies against the Dragons.

Faingaa has been included in the side despite exiting Saturday night’s match prematurely with a corked thigh while fellow rake Tatafu Polota-Nau will join the side today from Australia to provide coverage in the front row after Stephen Moore was unable to take his place in Saturday’s run-on side to due to back complaint.

The Wallabies won both midweek tour matches in 2009, defeating Gloucester 36-5 at Kingsholm before accounting for the Cardiff Blues, 31-3, at Cardiff City Stadium.

Cannot remember Gaston de Robertis ever playing in SA… well not in frontline games which matter anyway.

Cockerill said: “For everybody who wears the jersey, it is not their jersey, they just get to wear it for a short period of time…” what a load of nonsense, of course its their jersey, they get to keep them or can give them away to their opponents don’t they? Cummon this is the professional era, no time for soppy sentiment Cockerill, typical of a lot of things over here, always trying to hype things up to be more important than they are. Anyway if the club jersey is so special why do you sell them to your fans, or must anyone who bought a Leicester jersey also know its not actually there’s, what a joke!
