According to Owen Kock , Mapoe will further his career in Johannesburg with the Lions next season, which was confirmed by a “trustworthy source” within the Lions Union.
Lionel Mapoe has apparently been told by the South African Rugby Union not to leave for Singapore with the South African Vipers Sevens team, as he will have to join the Springbok tour group in Britain next week.
The Sevens squad left South Africa on Tuesday.
Sport24 is able to exclusively reveal that the wheels are turning behind the scenes to have Mapoe join the Bok squad as quickly as possible.
Mapoe has not played any rugby over the past seven months as at first he was injured and then he was involved in a contract dispute between the Sharks and the Free State.
It seems strange that Springbok coach, Peter de Villiers, is clearly keen to take a player overseas who has not played in a match for almost six months.
Mapoe has been involved in a tug-of-war contractual dispute between the Cheetahs and Sharks over the past few months.
The Cheetahs maintained they had a binding contract with Mapoe, which was confirmed by the High Court in Bloemfontein.
However, despite this, Mapoe refused to practice with the Cheetahs.
The Free State Rugby Union could not be reached for comment.
He’ll be drawing his pension soon, without playing again.
I suppose the Lions were prepared to pay the transfer fee the Cheetahs demanded from the Sharks….
The coach says “The aim is to win our games on tour”
If the aim was not to win then why bother going?
Every time a Bok team runs onto the field it has to win, non negotiable.
How can you take players on tour who have not played at top level for months and are coming back from injury?
Especially when you have just completed the CC with fit and ready players available!!
Another thing on national TV news I see the Boks training with PDV running with the backs!!
Is he going to select himself!!
I am starting to feel very sorry for the players, especially the likes of Lambie who has come out of a very professional set up and looks like he will be thrown into chaos.
typical PDV. We need some bloody centers, not more wings.
Hi almal.
Go BOKKE !!!
@ biltongbek:
HAHAHAHAHAHAHA!
Mapoe, what a merc! Will love to see how the Cheetahs tackle the k*k out of him next year.
@ Greenpoint-Gunner:
Well the Lions did say they are going to buy a few stars.
Disastars if you ask me.
So far it is Maku and now Mapoe, anyone see a trend here?
@ biltongbek:
Of course there’s a trend.
The GLRU’s development department focuses only on Soweto.
Soweto Rugby Club failed to meet a large percentage of their club match commitments this season, and the Lions “need” to have sufficient “previously disadvantaged” to please both sponsors, SARU and their new owners.
Simple answer, buy what you need to satisfy the protagonists.
I think it may backfire though.
Another trend is that both start with a capital M. The beast next on the list?

@ Scrumdown:
I would rather say its the rejects from other Unions that needs a new place their stake their claim. Conrad Hoffman should have waited before he singed with the Sharks. Speaking of which… Charl McCloud, Conrad Hoffman, Kokkerot…? Me thinks Kokkie will soon join up with the Kings… so will Captain Watson, once his contract is done.
Btw Billies, Im not really THAT surprised, just I think the way mapoe is throwing himself around like a los hoer at the moment is laughable.
The debate over where Lionel Mapoe will be playing has finally been settled with the Lions confirming on Wednesday that the Springbok Sevens star will be joining them next season.
While the 22-year-old will be relieved that the protracted saga surrounding his future is over, and he can now get back to playing rugby, although he may be still be forced to repay the salary he has received from the Sharks.
Frikkie Erasmus, who was the lawyer representing Mapoe and the Sharks during the legal tug-o-war with the Cheetahs, confirmed to rugby365 that he will no longer be representing Mapoe.
Mapoe has withdrawn his request for leave to appeal against the earlier court finding – which stated his contract with the Cheetahs was legally binding.
However, Erasmus said that the Sharks are continuing with their case against – to ask for leave to appeal against the finding, in favour of the Cheetahs.
“Obviously there is a cost implication,” Erasmus said.
The cost implications revolve around the fact that the Sharks having been paying Mapoe’s salary since he left the Cheetahs in May and there is matter of the legal fees.
The Sharks appear to have accepted that they will not have the services of Mapoe, but would like to recoup at least some of the money spent in trying to secure his services.
