Two Springboks are returning home from South Africa’s tour of the United Kingdom and Ireland, having returned positive samples for a banned stimulant.

Bok hooker Chiliboy Ralepelle and wing Bjorn Basson returned positive samples following the Test against Ireland on November 6.

Six Nations Rugby Ltd – who administers the November internationals – informed the South African Rugby Union of the positive Tests on Sunday.

As a result the pair are provisionally suspended from all rugby and returned to South Africa on Monday.

Basson injured an ankle in the Boks’ 29-25 win over Wales in Cardiff at the weekend and was due to return anyway.

The players were randomly drawn for testing by anti-doping officials following the Test in Dublin.

The players have the right to request that their ‘B’ sample be tested.

The pair returned an adverse analytical finding for Methylhexaneamine, a “non-specified stimulant” on the prohibited substances list of the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA).

It is scheduled to be re-classified as a “specified stimulant” from 1 January 2011.

* Methylhexaneamine (Forthan, Forthane, Floradrene, Geranamine), also known as dimethylamylamine (DMAA), is a drug and simple aliphatic amine used as a nasal decongestant, as well as treatment for hypertrophied or hyperplasic oral tissues, and as an active ingredient in party pills in New Zealand. Once trademarked under Forthane by Eli Lilly in 1971, the trademark has since expired, and so methylhexaneamine should not be confused with isoflurane, whose proprietary name in Australia is also Forthane. It is a vasoconstrictor, and can be administered by inhalation to the nasal mucosa to exert its effect. The trademark Geranamine is currently owned by Proviant Technologies. Methylhexaneamine is also a constituent of flower oil, sold as an integral component of nutritional supplements. Source: Wikipedia

    Scandal!!

Apparently this substance is often contained in Nose spray for congested nose….. was’nt Chiliboy suffering from Flu before the Irish Test… I seem to recall something like that..

Flok, nou mag mens nie eers meer ‘n toe neus dokter nie…. eishhhhhhh

  • 2

Well, Bjorn was already injured… ankle…

…. and Chiliboy does’nt deserve his place in the squad or team….

What I’m worried about is banning from rugby for next season….. oi!

  • 3

Well, there has been a lot of “sniffers” in BB country lately.

Perhaps they got hold of Spies’ shaving kit?

  • 4

Any player who has taken a banned substance “by mistake” is guilty of a lack of professionalism.
Wake up boys you are professional sportsman and, “sorry I didn’t know” doesn’t wash anymore.

  • 5

That nasal spray does fokkol for line out throwing.

  • 6

The list of banned substances is readily available on the IRB website, as are the forms and procedures to be used for applying for exemptions when using medicines that contain any banned substances such as in inhalers (for asthma) etc.

If the players concerned have taken ANY medication without first consulting the medical staff, then they are plain stupid and deserve to get banned.

Also, if the players were not “aware” of the regulations / procedures to be followed, then it smacks of gross incompetence on the part of the SARU management and medical staff, and also the players’ respective provincial unions.

These players have (in all likelihood) just forfeited the next 12 – 24 months of their Rugby careers. Can any of them afford it?

  • 7

Apparently it makes you go all cross-eyed so you can’t throw a ball in straight at the lineout.

  • 8

Arghhhhhhh demmit…. we can joke about this but it’s not good…. flok

  • 9

    Chilli?

    Nose congestion?

    Tell me another one.

  • 10

    9@ Pam Anderson:
For that nose he had to use LOTSSSSSS of Nasal Spray….. hehehe

    Sorry….

  • 11

I’m convinced too much Nasal Spray affects your brain adversely.. and brings you to the brink of madness…

My first wife used a lot of Vics Nasal Spray…

    Bwahahaha

  • 15

This is a crazy situation, is there any word on how long they have been banned for?

  • 16

    15@ Bullscot:
Not banned yet, there has to be an Official IRB Hearing for that… they are suspended from rugby, for now.

  • 17

die lys van verbode middels moet beslis hersien word.ek bedoel neus sproei?aangesien bokke altyd lang geskors word kan chiliboy maar sy desember holiday by die see beplan.

  • 18

    17@ Piet visagie:
Hulle kan beide dalk 2 jaar kry…

Of dalk so min soos 3 maande…

  • 19

    16@ grootblousmile:
Thanks, hopefully they won’t have it too bad, from a selfish Bulls perspective, we have just invested a lot in Basson, was hoping to see him have a good SUPER 15 with us next year.

  • 20

  • 22

Unprofessional I’m afraid, the bloody media is having a field day with this in the UK and also that woman who got killed in Gugulethu on Saturday night!!!

  • 23

    22@ 4man:
Who got killed in Gugulethu on Saturday night… or rather, who did not get killed there Saturday night?

Killings do not make big time news here…

  • 24

  • 30

Not good news this at all, especially for SA rugby and of course the Bulls.

Now Mvovo will get a chance and so too will Strauss.
