The IRB recommends an 8 week ban for head butting, Mealamu only received a 4 week ban.

All Blacks hooker Keven Mealamu has received a four-week suspension for head butting Lewis Moody at Twickenham last Saturday, which is a total farce if you consider that  Bok lock Bakkies Botha was banned for nine weeks after head butting Jimmy Cowan.

The judicial officer determined it was an intentional act of foul play, and a mid-range entry point in the IRB list of sanctions of eight weeks. But in the absence of aggravating factors, together with compelling mitigating factors including the player’s conduct at the hearing and his exemplary disciplinary record, reduced the suspension to 4 weeks.

The All Blacks will appeal the verdict.

But All Blacks assistant coach Steve Hansen announced on the team website that they are determined to defend Mealamu’s reputation.

Hansen says Mealamu is “not a dirty player, he never has been. This is a case we’ll go to the death on.”

Hansen hopes the International Rugby Board’s three-member panel will hear the appeal on Friday.

I wonder if PdeV said this how it would be publicized in the press?

    @ grootblousmile:
nee wat…yes there must be law and order, but I am not so sure about this “mitigating circumstances” stuff, but I also have a problem with that in civil society as it appears it is always the criminals that are taking advantage of all the gaps and loopholes that they can, but then I suppose the normal law abiding man does not appear in court and by rote nor does he appear in front of the citing commissioner. So yes Bakkies must pull his neck in and if someone said something about my mother (a la Mealamu) then I would also moer him. As an old street fighter I also know the best punch is the “Liverpool kiss”….so in more ways than one “you must use your head”

New Zealand captain Richie McCaw has put the boot into the judicial systems that operates in international rugby, following the four-week ban handed down to All Black teammate Kevin Mealamu.

Kerm lekker julle donners , julle was mos stil toe ons gekla het. Swak spormanskap, Rugby glo n oneer aangedoen, ne.

However, McCaw felt strongly about what he term the “inconsistency of rugby’s judicial system” after England hooker Dylan Hartley escaped disciplinary action.

That’s the biggest frustration as a player – the inconsistency,” McCaw told the media.

“I don’t like to be bitching and moaning about it – that’s not the way I am – but all players would like to see a level of consistency.

En so het ons ook gese, en toe wat se hulle, kry vir julle Ma het gebak. Ek kry die idee dat die ABs klaar gehaunt word. Watch it, it is going to be very interesting.

“I don’t know whether the ref saw it or not but I certainly made it known to him that I’d been hit. I don’t like people to take cheap shots – that annoys me.”

All Blacks lock Brad Thorn saw Hartley career into McCaw and shoved the England hooker to the turf, sparking a melee.

“I think you saw my reaction and Brad’s reaction in the field, what we thought about it. You don’t like those things happening – that’s not the game of rugby,” McCaw added.

“You have to put your faith in the people that make those decisions. He’s obviously decided it wasn’t worthy.”

    Rugby365 says-

As we said before, the Kiwis never like to be ‘beaten to the punch’ by a Springbok, so we find Henry and Mealamu’s explanations rather entertaining.

Mealamu: “I’m not like that. No, definitely not.” (Ed: Um… were you not part of the double-barrel spear tackle that put B&I Lions captain Brian O’Driscoll out of the 2005 tour? Do you really want to go down that route?)

Henry: “He’s been cited for striking the head. It surprises me. He’s probably the cleanest player in the world, isn’t he? It was purely accidental as far as I know.” (Ed: Ditto!)

Kan ons nie ‘n “like” funksie kry soos op facebook nie? In daai geval “like” ek # 31, 42, 43, 46, 49 🙂

Bullscot, your suggestion is an interesting one.

I think the ban period should be carried over, for the simple reason that it would encourage the players not to play dirty at the end of the season since it is “their last games anyway” of some twak like that.

As for the yellow card being carried over… thats gonna be a bit rediculous. I mean, imagine SA play against Fiji, last 5 minutes Morne Steyn gets in a scuffle, yellow card, then the next game is against the Aussies, in Brisbane… now we have to play the first 5-6 minutes with 14 men. Its gonna be a bit of a balls up. Also, imagine someone like Stuart DICK blows (hehehe) the hypothetical Fijian game?

Getting back to the carry over of bans. It should be at the same level. Ban in a EOYT game for the Boks, then means that the player could then play for a team in the Super 14, however cannot play for the Boks for the remaining amount of weeks. What do you think?

  • 51

    @ Greenpoint-Gunner:
No for the yellow card I didn’t make it clear I mean that the player who gets the card must not be allowed back on field in the following game before the full 10 minutes is done, this wouldn’t mean the team should have to start with one player less, but at least the guilty party would then miss the start of the game and at best make the team from the bench, maybe a bit of a harsh impractical suggestion especially when the one player gets the ‘team yellow card’ after repeated offences by other guys, but also mentioned that this would be the case, appeal pending, to cover a harsh yellow.

Carry over bans should be at same level but the exception would be in the step up to national level, ie. anyone picking up a ban in Currie Cup semi-final for 3 games should not be available for the final if their team make it and the first 2 Bok games on EOYT. I guess it does get a bit complicated to try come up with the best idea but thats what the administrators get paid so much for.
Can you believe the All Blacks appealing the head butt ban and according to reports have Mealamu bracketed in the side for this Saturday! There must be something in the background we are not aware of, but hell our eyes could not have lied to us it was a head butt.
