Former Bulls and Pumas utility back Casper Steyn is fighting for his life after a car accident on Monday night.

Steyn was on his way home at around 22:30 when he lost control of his Ford Ranger bakkie and rolled the car. He was less than a kilometre from his home in Centurion when the accident happened.

Steyn was thrown out of the bakkie and received serious head and facial wounds from the accident.

His doctor, and former Bulls doctor Henry Kelbrick told SuperSport.com that Steyn was currently in a serious, but stable condition.

“It is too early to say exactly how he will recover, but the wounds are serious. He is receiving top medical care at the moment though,” Dr Kelbrick said.

Steyn is currently being treated in the intensive care unit at Unitas hospital.

The 37-year old was well known as the “Spook van Loftus” (Ghost of Loftus) and still holds the Blue Bulls record for the most points in a Currie Cup season.

A gifted kicker with an ability to rake in points, he made his debut in 1997 in the Super 12 and played at the Bulls until 2001 before moving to the Pumas in Witbank. He spent several seasons playing rugby in Italy as well.

Steyn continued to play at the Pumas until 2006 when a serious neck injury forced him to retire from rugby. He was part of the Blue Bulls squad that won the Currie Cup in 1998 for the first time in seven years under then coach Eugene van Wyk.

Steyn played 57 times for the Bulls, scoring a massive 815 points in the process. He and his wife have a four year old son and a one year old daughter.
