The Sharks players!
15 Louis Ludik:
Solid in the last line and made a couple of crucial tackles – one very big hit that stopped Schalk Burger in his tracks and knocked him back. Then there was a crucial penalty turnover.
7/10
14 Odwa Ndungane:
Steady as always and few good runs. You can always trust this reliable Bok.
6/10
13 Stefan TerblanchΓ©(captain):
Gave away a penalty inside the first minute for holding in tackle and then also didn’t find touch with a couple of penalties. Nit his best day at the office.
5/10
12 Andries Strauss:
Some strong carries in midfield and very powerful on defence – some really big hits. He won a couple of crucial penalty turnovers. He may be limited in some respects, but a very valuable player in this Sharks set-up.
9/10
11 Lwazi Mvovo:
Great chase for McLeod’s try and good covering tackle on Aplon that saved a try. Would have liked more chances on attack.
6/10
10 Patrick Lambie:
Sensational break for his try in the 14th minute – stepped De Waal, broke Fondse’s tackle and handed off Schalk Burger – his tactical kicking also from the top shelve
10/10
9 Charl McLeod:
Showed up Januarie big time. His great tactical appreciation made the Bok scrumhalf look second-rate, but he was injured late in the first half.
8/10
8 Ryan Kankowski:
He was a great link and had some nice carries. Also great at the restarts and put paid to the Duane Vermeulen debate.
8/10
7 Willem Alberts:
He was killing Province with his strong runs all game long and brutal on defence.
7/10
6 Keegan Daniel:
Won a very good penalty turnover won and then another crucial turnover early in the second half that stopped a promising WP move. Hard working player.
7/10
5 Alistair Hargreaves:
Had a couple of really great line-out steals and worked hard in the contact area.
6/10
4 Steven Sykes:
He had a very big physical presence and did his work in the set pieces.
6/10
3 Jannie du Plessis:
Worked hard in the contact area and stood his ground in the scrums.
6/10
2 Bismarck du Plessis:
Great rip for turnover that resulted in McLeod’s try and then also won a great penalty turnover. Was his best game of the year by some margin – tackling his heart out. He did play on the edge and gave away a couple of penalties.
8/10
1 Tendai Mtawarira:
Not too many of his famous carries, but was solid allround and strong in the scrums.
6/10
Replacements:
16 Craig Burden:
Not used.
17 Eugene van Staden (on for Jannie du Plessis, 56th min):
Was solid, rather than spectacular, but did nothing wrong.
6/10
18 Anton Bresler (on for Sykes, 80th min):
Not enough time to be rated.
19 Jacques Botes (on for Hargreaves, 68th min):
Not enough time to be rated.
20 Rory Kockott (on for McLeod, 40th min):
Early mistake, when kicked directly into touch. Then a great tackle on Jantjes, but his service was not as effective as McLeod.
6/10
21 AndrΓ© Pretorius:
Not used.
22 Riaan Swanepoel (on for Strauss, 71st min):
Not enough time to be rated.
Western Province players:
15 Conrad Jantjes:
Very few chances on attack and even though he was better on attack after the break, still had a relatively quiet day.
5/10
14 Gio Aplon:
He was well-watched, but looked dangerous with the ball in hand on occasion.
5/10
13 Juan de Jongh:
He had a few strong runs, which included a good hand-off on Lambie. However, he left the field injured in the 30th minute.
5/10
12 Jean de Villiers:
Lots of energy and a few darting runs. He didn’t see enough of the ball on attack and was reduced to a defensive role.
5/10
11 Bryan Habana:
Conceded early penalty at the tackle and also went for intercept – which did not comer off. Had a great chip-‘n-chase, breaking the line with a great angled run. One of the better backs.
6/10
10 Willem de Waal:
He started with a hit one, missed-two penalties and that filtered into the rest of his game – with poor tactical kicking and also not finding touch with a crucial penalty.
2/10
9 Ricky Januarie:
Lasted only 18 minutes when he was taken off with an ‘injury’. Maybe the coaches realised he was costing them and removed him.
2/10
8 Duane Vermeulen:
Couple of strong runs, but quieter than usual in the first half. He was more physical after the break, but well looked after.
6/10
7 Francois Louw:
Looked frustrated by the Sharks’ abrasive display and gave away several penalties. Worked hard, but outplayed by the Sharks loose forwards.
5/10
6 Schalk Burger (captain):
Gave away a penalty for high tackle on Lambie and became frustrated with the manner ion which his team was dominated. Also produced – a couple of knock-ons that ended a promising moves.
4/10
5 Anton van Zyl:
Struggled throughout the game. which started when he knocked on a restart. Not his best game.
4/10
4 Adriaan Fondse:
One great line-out stealΒ early on, but tended to disappear at times. Also gave away a couple of penalties.
4/10
3 Brok Harris:
The pace of the game caught him out and he was reduced to a defensive role. Appeared in the backline too often.
3/10
2 Deon Fourie:
Looked good in one blistering run, but otherwise not much of an impact. His poor line-out throw early in the second half, was very costly.
4/10
1 JD Moller:
Outplayed by the Sharks heavies. Replaced at half-time.
4/10
Replacements:
16 Hanyani Shimange:
Not used.
17 JC Kritzinger (on for Moller, 40 min):
Had no real impact on the game.
4/10
18 De Kock Steenkamp (on for Fondse, 56th min):
He tried to be the physical presence Province lacked, but by the time he came on the game was a lost cause.
5/10
19 Pieter Louw:
Not used.
20 Dewaldt Duvenage (on for Januarie, 18th min):
Initially his crisp service made a big difference to WP, but his game deteriorated after the break.
4/10
21 Lionel CronjΓ© (on for Bosch, 68th min):
Not enough time to be rated.
22 Paul Bosch (on for De Jongh, 30th min):
Tried hard, but had limited opportunities.
4/10
Been very disappointed with Lionel Cronje when he has been given a chance. Was awesome at age group level, and did well earlier this year when he was given a bit of a run in the Super 14, but after the car incident and being dropped and not getting a lot of game time he’s been really poor. Tonight in 12 minutes he had a -5/10 performance, knocking balls left and right. Taking bad options.
Jul is te sag op die WP manne. Behalwe Francois Louw. Ek sou hom ‘n 8 gegee het.
Hierdie f@?&#n streeptruie moet nou begin wakker word.
Who cares of jy in 2 finals in ‘n jaar was?
Ek is GATVOL verby.
So, cheers Lambie, nice knowing you bro!
@ Rugbyprof:
1. AC was die mees gehate ass coach in Jake se tyd, ons het sy bloed gesoek hy was pateties, nou het hy bietjie sukses met hierdie saamgeflanste huursoldate, maar…
Nou ja ek het nou n klomp Bollie gepraat use it or lose it. π
As much as I rate Lambie I think his rating is a bit over board,he did miss a few kicks at poles and he did have a few poor kicks out of hand but otherwise was phenomenal.. As per usual the Sharks played their best when they were written off and considered to be under dogs. Well done Province, you are a good side but you just came up against a very strong motivated side that wanted it more.
die huursoldate was man vir man beter as wp,ver al strauss alberts bismark en lambie, stefaans se kapteinskap was op baie beter as scalk
Player ratings for WP are a little difficult to make as this was a big hiding and not because they did not take kicks for goal as some people will say today.
They were out muscled for the ball and had to constantly tackle to try and keep the Sharks from getting gain line momentum.
That takes a lot out of a team both mentally and physically.
When they did have the ball they could not get gain line momentum themselves because of the quality of the Sharks defence.
The game is simply about keeping the ball and having the ability to get across the gain line until space opens up.
Winston, congrats dude! You’re the 1st humble Sharkie I’ve come across the whole season, and it’s guys like you who deserve to share in your team’s win. We were beaten by an awesome side who wanted it more in the final game and deserved it cause they finished top of the log. The only sour note was the Shark mascot wiping a WP flag through his bum. It’s just bad taste and I’m sure any decent sports fan would agree.
Superbul, al jou punte is spot on! Daai moegoe Coetzee moet gaan.
Wees geduldig. Rugby is ‘n maklike game.
Thanks for the kind words Prof, dont get me wrong I wanted us to win badly and for the enviroment to be like a cauldran but people that do those types of things are just pricks and should be banned from ever attending live rugby for life. We were just joking after the game that the only reason that the Sharks won was because Western Province handed it to us on a plate by beating our bogey side, the Cheetahs π
Prof, most if not all the Sharks supporters are humble on this site,Puma, myself,Sharky.Snoek etc all are humble in defeat and gracious in victory, there may be a bit of banter between us and the Bulls supporters on this blog but its all in jest and not serious. Thats the main reason I blog here because nothing is ever made personal or ugly.

Ek weet ons langste droogte was 4 jaar sonder n Beker.
Maar daar is NOU ernstige besluite nodig daar by WP. Of gaan n 2de plek all right geag word. Sterkte.
@ superBul:
Wou nog byse-
Kry net soos ons Bulle iewers n losskakel soos Lambie of Elton Jantjies.
π Ek sal maar altyd by my spannetjie staan.
Dit sou ok gewees het as hul onder iemand soos ‘n Heyneke of Plumtree of Mitchell of Eddie Jones in die Bok setup kon leer, maar, helaas, they are being led like Lamb(ie)s to the slaughterhouse! π
PS : is dit net ek of is daar ander soos ek wat my provinsie liewer het as my land?
@ Rugbyprof:
Soos veral in Hougaart se geval.
Pedro said this on his Blog
An irony is that in the run up talks during the week many experts maintained that the cup would be won by a player showing some magic and as Province had the superior backs it was most likely to come from one of them. There was a player who showed his magic, a youngster from the Sharks called Lambie! What a talent, what a player, what a future! I look forward to seeing him when he reaches physical maturity. He and the other youngsters who have made the Springbok squad deserve to be there and will do us proud in the future.
Super, ekkit nooit besef jys so ‘n groot Lambie fan nie? π
@ fender:
@ Rugbyprof:
Prof your comment about Sharks supporters is a generalisation and is probably not true about most true rugby supporters who happen to support the Sharks, of who quite a few blog here.
Personally I think WP were overawed by the occasion, having come to their first final in 10 years and the Sharks had something to prove after the debacle against the Bulls two years ago. I will always give credit where credit is due…and support SA rugby ahead of any province.
I agree with Winston to rate Lambie 10/10 is incorrect…lets see how he goes in a Bok setup and see if he can take self motivation with him into the Bok squad. Plumtree gets the best out of the players b ecause of the way he treats them, this wont happen in a National setup, where players must take a lot more responsibility for their play.
I was delighted to see that the guys who got the callup were all the ones I wanted to get it…but clearly at flyhalf we now have too many people going on this tour…perhaps Lambie is being considered for a backup no 15 role behind Frans Steyn. Elton Jantjes emulates Carlos Spencers play and the style of the Boks is different, we also have to see how he goes. Alberts I think will very quickly cement a spot in the starting lineup….the rest have to prove themselves first and dare I say it perhaps Schalk is approaching the end of his career.
Anyway commiserations to my WP mates…two finals in one year is a bloody good effort, but the game yesterday just shows that we rate Currie Cup above Super 14 in our passion….and I think this caused the WP nerves.
GO BOKS and lets see if we can win a grand slam…this is a good squad.

if you read from the article by Gavin rich you will see he agrees there, here is a quote.
WP had spoken a lot in the two weeks between the semi-final and final about the need to make up for the mistake they made in the Super 14 final by starting the game quickly β and maybe in retrospect they made too much of it. When they suddenly found themselves down 10-3 to what was a soft try, WP looked rattled, perhaps more than they should have been.
In losing some of their composure they started to make mistakes, and it was a defensive error that let Lambie in for his first try as the Sharks exploited the shifting WP defence by running straight. That try meant that the Sharks were 17-3 ahead after fewer minutes. It was the Super 14 final all over again and it was game over.

WP might have fought their way back were it not for some inexplicably poor captaincy in the second half. Province scored just before half-time and were behind by 13 points going into the last 40 minutes, but the way they rushed their game, and refused to take kicks at goal, suggested they thought they were 33 points behind.
i think Danie Roussouw is also history, unless he have a great Super competition next year
hey guys
just popped in to congratulate the shark supporters on winning the final
your team played very well and deserved to be crown cc champions 2010
….
sigh …. o, its crying time AGAIN!! π₯
..
anyway guys
enjoy the rest of the evening
cheers!!
super @ 26
so true
i still cant understand why schalk didnt take the options to go for posts
.. and it is something that started as early as (i think) the 26th minute!! π―
..
anyway the game is done and dusted
no use crying over spilled milk now, is it?
@asleigh wiepie was maar poefie gewees gister jong
@ Ashley:
