Pretoria – Vodacom Blue Bulls No 8, Pierre Spies, has been ruled out of Saturday’s Absa Currie Cup rugby match against Griquas in Kimberley.
Spies was part of a conditioning programme followed by contracted Springboks and is yet to play in the Currie Cup competition, but is suffering from a calf strain.
Victor Matfield, Bakkies Botha, Danie Rossouw, Wynand Olivier and Morne Steyn will all be considered for the match in Kimberley, the first after being allowed back to provincial rugby.
Gurthro Steenkamp (broken arm), Gerrit-Jan van Velze (broken thumb), Juandre Kruger (broken hand) and Deon Stegmann (hamstring) have been ruled out as well.
Gary Botha (knee) is expected to be fit for the last round-robin clash of the competition.

Gurthro Steenkamp broke one of the 2 bones in the right forearm according to Doc Org Strauss, who attended the after match presser on Saturday evening.
I would select a loose trio of Derick Kuun (openside), CJ Stander (blindside) and Dewald Potgieter (No 8 ) for this coming weekend’s clash against Griquas.
Will be good to have Victor & Danie & Bakkies back, olso great to have Morné & Wynand Meisiekind back…. although I must say Stefan Watermeyer is getting better each game and had the wood over both Jean de Villiers and Juan de Jongh this past Saturday…. maybe move him (13) in next to Wynand (12)…
Steggies still out is a worry man…. need the little bugger to be game fit for the semi’s and possible final.
Guthro’s injury is a major blow for EOYT IMO.
The Bokke traditionally battle in the scrummage with heavy underfoot conditions, and I can’t see it changing or getting any easier without Guthro there.
Oh vlok, looks like the Europeans are imploding like a NZ RWC campaign over in Wales!
