HONG KONG: At last the 26-month trans-Tasman drought is over … and it couldn’t have happened in more spectacular style when Wallabies winger James O’Connor became the hero of Australian rugby by converting his own last-minute try to win an extraordinary Test at Hong Kong Stadium last night.
The Wallabies appeared headed for their 11th straight trans-Tasman loss when they lost momentum midway through the game, but showed incredible heart in the final quarter to level the scores at 24-24 after the final bell, when Australia played endless phase play until O’Connor found the gap to score. If that was not inspirational enough, O’Connor then showed – like Kurtley Beale in Bloemfontein – he can handle the big moment, converting his kick from near the sideline to inspire wild scenes of jubilation among the Wallabies.
