The ink has not yet dried on the Blue Bulls contract of Griquas and Springbok wing Bjorn Basson and already there have been major consequences for the Griqualand West Rugby Union (GWRU).
It is believed that they did not consult Super 15 partners Free State and the Griffons in the decision to make Basson available to the Bulls.
The Cheetahs will now be seeking legal advice to determine whether the GWRU had disregarded the policy for the transfer of Super 14 players that had been signed by all three provinces.
If that has happened, legal steps may be taken against Griquas and in an extreme scenario his contract with the Blue Bulls may even be voided.
Basson is due to report for duty in Pretoria on November 1 once he has completed his Currie Cup duties with Griquas.
Cheetahs managing director Harold Verster was in a tele-conference with Griquas and the Griffons on Tuesday morning in which Basson’s move was discussed in depth.
The Cheetahs paid 60% of Basson’s Super 14 salary.
“In light of what has happened, the Cheetahs’ executive committee gave approval for us to seek legal advice on the matter,” said Verster.
“As soon as we have received the necessary recommendations there will be a special directors meeting where the findings, and the consequences thereof, will be discussed,” said Verster.
The Cheetahs are currently locked in a legal battle with the Sharks about the services of another wing, Lionel Mapoe.
The loss of Basson will be another setback for the Cheetahs ahead of next year’s Super 15.
“Bjorn is one of the Cheetahs’ top players. We are making every attempt to keep our star players in the region. We have to protect our interests,” said Verster.
Griquas chief executive Arni van Rooyen did not want to comment.
OK, 1st story read that there were “months” of negotiations which included the Cheetahs.
Maybe ABSA complained the Cheetahs becoming too white.
Maybe they should ask ABSA for special sponsorship so they can pay their talent a bit more than peanuts so they stay in the region.
This is becoming a bit of a joke really.
Am I to beleive that not only SARU but also the Unions are being managed by a bunch of incompetent fools. Do these Unions not have legal advsiors who explain to them contractual issues?
Nou wat nou gehasie?
😆
Ek weet nie of ek moet lag of huil nie………
sooooooooooooooooooooo
he’s good enough to play SUPER RUGBY for the cheetahs
but
not good enough for their cc campaign?
…
yes, i do not understand the contractual issues around the player
but
i also cant understand how the cheetahs can bitch about a player released from his contract by GRIQUAS
when they (the CHEETAHS) did not deem him good enough to contract him!!
…
😯 or is it a case of losing a good enough player for super rugby duty
and still be able to pay him
with peanuts?
@ Ashley:
He is a Griqua player with a S14/15 contract of which the cheetahs pay 60% of his salary. So the cheetahs feel they have a say, as they actually pay most of his salary.
So would this mean he will play CC for the bulls and S15 for the Cheetahs, since he has a S15 contract with them?

get your facts straight first before having a stab at the cheetahs fella

When the shoe fits hey?
geagte oom bos_otter @ 7
sal u dan so gaaf wees om vir my al die feite te verduidelik?
o,
en terwyl oom daarmee besig is,
sal oom maar asseblief stadig tik
want ek kanni vinnig leesie!! 😀

Suppose the Bulls not to blame here…griekwas shouldn’t have released him without consulting the Cheetahs
bos_otter @ 13
For once the Sharks are not involved with a Contract dispute. Amazing 🙂
@ Ashley:
winston @ 16
😆 sooooooooooo
does that make province the only honest rugby outfit in south africa?
amazing!! 😉
bos_otter @ 17
ok bru, daai gedeelte verstaan ek,
maar
was basson gekontrakteer vir ñ sekere tydperk,
of was dit slegs ñ gentleman’s agreement dat hy obviously beskikbaar sou wees op ñ jaarlikse basis vir superrugby duties
in aggenome vorm, beskikbaarheid ens?
@ Snoek:9 – Snoek..hehehe. I wonder? 😀 😀
Said yesterday if Basson can sign with Bulls, then it is double standards by Cheetahs that they wont let Sharks pay them a transfer fee for Mapoe.
Now HOPE we can keep JPP. Cause heard Bulls are wanting him too. If they don’t get Basson they will go after JPP. Sharks must try and keep JPP and not let him go. Need to offer him something really big to keep him.
@ Winston: 😀

@ Ashley:18 – Ash, Could be but Province did have to fight for J. Fourie. But all legal of course. 😉
bos_otter @ 20
puma @ 25
😀 i cant remember that far back!! 😉
@ Ashley:27 – Ash…..hehehehe. Thought not 😆
Is swak man.
I do feel sorry for Cheetahs losing so many of their top talent. Otherwise they would be a powerhouse in SA rugby if that never happened. BUT they don’t have the money that other unions have. Somehow they need to find a way of keeping their talent. The only way is to pay them tops for their service otherwise those players will always look somewhere else. Pity that it comes to money but that is how it is all over the world in sport. Just have to look at soccer how players change from clubs overseas. They pay mega bucks for transfer fees. Maybe Cheetahs need to put a very steep transfer fee on their players. Might help a bit with the money side of things there but only just.
