If YOU  were made the consultant to assist Peter de Villiers what would you do? Lets see what Rugby-Talk bloggers have up their sleeve. A few rules apply.

Result of Survey Pending

Too few responses on the Survey to get a trend. We are certainly not blaming the same things for our poor Tri Nation performance.

You must work with him you can not get rid of him, he will stay, whatever.

We assume that he will implement your recommendations.

You are allowed to pick a core group of 12 players that YOU feel must be there.

You may appoint two assistants, so if you fire Muir and Gold your quota is up.

You must appoint a Captain and Vice Captain.

Furthermore you must put your recommendations in writing on what game plan you will play.

Please fill in this check list of reasons why you think the Springboks struggled so much in the Tri Nations.

    Captain – Victor Matfield
Vice Captain – Fourie du Preez

Replace Dick Muir with Pieter Roussouw
    Bring in Sherell Calder

Kick less and get Morne to kick into the stands. Play a distinctive pattern , my suggestion will be the Bulls one. Forget to try and change to a running game, not enough time to change that with confidence. get the players to stay in their defensive channels, mix it with rush defense.

Additional change , get Peter to talk Afrikaans and restrict his sessions with the press, talk less.

Game plan, kicks for touch into the pavillion, grubber more and up and under less, rather kick low and flat into space than up. But kick less.

More variation in attack, stop being so intent on crashball it is predicable.

Forget the intercept, remain in the defensive line.

At the rucks know what your job is when you are the tackler, know your job when you arrive first, etc. Also do what the All Blacks do, stay legally onside but create space. Don’t look down look up.

The ball carrier must be in the proper body position when in close quarter running, different to how backs go into contact at speed. Often in close contact there are more defenders, basic science tells you you can’t then have a high body position.

More patience on attack, look for the offload in the tackle, run at the gap, not the defender.Leg drive, don’t run away from the support runner, he then needs nore time to get there to secure ruck ball.

No over the back line out throw ins, if the maul doesn’t get going immediately get the ball out.

    Communication at all times.

I can go on forever, but you’ll get bored

    Core Group of 12 Players:
    Gurthro Steenkamp
    Bismarck du Plessis
    Victor Matfield
    Danie Rossouw
    Heinrich Brussow & Schalk Burger
    Juan Smith
    Fourie du Preez, Francois Hougaard
    Morne Steyn
    Juan de Jongh
    Jaque Fourie

    Firing & Hiring Assistants:
Damn, needed 3 changes here… Fire Muir (definately) and replace with Slapchips or Fleckie, bring in a defensive specialist (definate) like Mc Farlane of the Bulls or Jacques Nienaber of Stormers / WP and if I had the luxury of more choice fire Gold and replace with Heyneke Meyer as forwards coach.

    Captain & Vice Captain:
    Victor Matfield and Juan Smith

    Style & How to play:
Firstly: Concentrate on possession rugby, which is absolutely essential under the New Law Interpretations, which implies the following:
    1. ALWAYS strive for and achieve far more than 50% possession.
    2. Utilize a fetcher or “Traditional Opensider” and have a balanced loose trio who play very heavily towards the ball.
    3. Do not kick possession away needlessly and if you kick, kick it well and solidly out, without opportunities to use a quick throw.
    4. Contest their lineouts well.
    5. Play in their faces on defence.
    6. With ball in hand, attack space in stead of attacking the player in front of you.
    7. Keep impeckable dicipline… do NOT GIVE penalties away or allow ourselves to play with less than 15 players!
    8. Give due attention to tight phases – scrums & lineouts, we have to hold more than our own, we need to dominate.
    9. By keeping possession, force the other team to give penalties away, being so desperate to get their hands on the ball…. then punish them by means of Morné’s boot and rack up the points.
    10. Limit 50/50 passes, rather recycle and build the phases than give a possibly bad pass.
    11. Slow down opposition ball at the breakdowns to allow defences to set themselves up properly.

Secondly: DEFENCE, DEFENCE, DEFENCE!! Defence wins World Cups, it implies, amongst others, the following:
    1. First time tackling.
    2. Keeping defensive lines and not letting players shoot up early or lag behind.
    3. Do not try to intercept unnecessarily.
    4. Have clear DIRECTIVES about when to drift on defence and when to use rush / umbrella defence and work out very clear cover defensive structure and / or 2nd line of defence.
    5. Communicate!!

Thirdly: Play players in their rightful positions, not out of position!
    1. No centres on the wing.
    2. No hookers on at prop
    3. Use specialists in their positions

    Fourthly: Build an innings:
    1. Kick all possible penalties to posts, slowly and surely build a lead.
    2. Keep focus for 80 minutes.
    3. Do not make subs for the sake of subs, make subs when NECESSARY.
    4. Be patient, the gaps WILL come.

Fithly: Have a solid Game Plan and ALTERNATIVES (Plan B and C):
    1. Kicking up and unders and chasing them is not the only strategy, FFS!!!
    2. Mix the play well between keeping it up front and using the backs.
    3. Play to our stenghts.
    4. Use the width of the field and sometimes get the ball to our wings.
    5. Maak voor sag, en slaan dan toe agter.
    6. Attack the advantage line or beyond that!
    7. Tight 5 needs to play TIGHT, the loosies need to hunt as a pack, the halfback pairing needs to dictate and dominate, the midfield needs to be solid and dependable, the back 3 needs to be safe on defence and exciting on attack.

Well, that is a start, is’nt it!

Jerome Kaino said this, we can also try this.

We’ve also been working on our kick offs quite a lot recently. It’s like the third set piece, after scrums and lineouts. It’s somewhere we can target to get hold of the ball and to make sure it’s hard for the opposition to settle into the game.

    Dan Carter-

We had a busy training day, with two team sessions and a gym session. The first team session Ted (Graham Henry) likes to call the ‘cerebral session’. We went through our game strategy and key points. It’s all about the details. After that session all the guys had real clarity. Then in the afternoon we went really physical and put the whole plan together at full speed. In between team runs, most of the guys did a short, sharp power session at the gym, but I’m getting a bit old now so I had to do a rehab and stretch session.

Ag nee, fliksem het nou net laaaang “post” begin tik en daar verloor ek als!! Eish….

    JUSTICE
Bloemfontein – Free State Cheetahs wing Lionel Mapoe, was on Wednesday ordered by a Bloemfontein court to report at the Cheetahs by Thursday 15:00.

The court order follows a dispute when Mapoe joined the Sharks while still contracted to the Cheetahs.

Mapoe would be able to play for the Cheetahs from Thursday.

There is already an Article up on R-T about this…

  • 15

    @ 13&14

Wonder how this will effect the vibe in the Cheetahs camp. Mapoe is truly a great player, but he openly and repeatedly stated that he wants to play for the Sharks… so how do you pick a player that does not want to play for you?

Anyway, back to the article/issue at hand.

    1.) DROP UP AND UNDERS!!!

I can see what the point of a good kicking game is. I mean, it really helps to relieve pressure and gain field position. Jake White believed(s) that you cant run onto a field without at least 3 good kickers, with at least one left footed kicker.
BUT FFS! what is the point of up and unders??? Especially when our best chaser from the last three years, Habana, is in a serious dip of form?

    2.) KNOW WHEN TO KICK.

This especially applies to the case of the scrumhalf. If you don’t have FdP, sadly, you have to change/revamp, your game plan. And why not? Look at the difference that Francois Hougaard made when he started to run the ball? Don’t force a gameplan on a scrum half (or any other player for that matter) if they simply wont be able to do it. In that case pick a different player. Swop Bricky for Ruan… for example.
I would also advise that the Boks does not kick ANYTHING unless its from within their own 22. And even then, when we are looking at possible ariel ping pong, rather instruct the forwards to gather 15 meters in front of the cather(s) and let them link up. This way you retain possession, and can slowly make your way up field.
Depending on whether the opp. Defense runs up or stands back, you can employ (1) a skip out pass to lose forwards (think in this case of Juan Smith’s try in the first home game against Aus this year), if they do not chase up.
    (2) employ the Brumbies/Aussie strategy under Eddie Jones, where they would basically go through 15 phases, sucking in defenders, making meters and sapping the opp.

It really is all abut possession. Case in point. 2005 when the Boks could have won in NZ, but had to defend for most of the last 20 minutes.

    3.) DEFENSE

First, you need a defensive coach. DUH!!?!?! X-P
After that, I would say, get rid of the rush/umbrella defense.
Dont get me wrong, I like the idea… but you need impeccable fitness and discipline, as well as on form strike runners/finishers. This used to be Habana for us, but again, he is out of form. And JPP has always been a great player, but not exactly the perfect finisher.
If this plan is not well (not perfect, just well) executed, holes WILL open up. Not a good thing.
Rather follow the WP/Stormers idea of this year. Commit 2 players to every tackle, and then 1, MAYBE 2 more, to the breakdown. What this in effect results in is that they always have extra defenders standing of. At one point this year during the S14 I thought, WTF?, it just seems as though they ALWAYS have players to defend with, even with 2 guys going in for a tackle. It all comes down to great communication, perfect structures (1st, 2nd, 3rd line of defense) and a ball stealer. In MOST of WP’s tackles that they make, you will see FLouw in there, with the sole purpose of trying to steel the ball. Off course he also assists in the tackle, but barely goes to ground. That is why he was ineffective at the Boks. They just played him and thought that it would work. F*cking Morons.
Anyway, this can also be done by Brussouw or Burger. It would however mean that you HAVE to drop Spies. With one player primarily committed to fetching, you need two MONSTERS on defense to complete the back row.

Anyway, thats about that for me. As far as tight 5 play goes, Im a dud, and until that is sorted out, there is really no point in talking about the backline.

For what its worth, this would be my EOTY team
