South African Rugby Boss Oregan Hoskins has called for calm amid widespread calls for Springboks coach Peter de Villiers to be sacked.
The call to sack De Villiers comes after the Springboks worst ever TriNations campaign in 15 years and a slump which followed their TriNations triumph last year.
This year the Springboks have lost five out of their 10 Tests but all of the losses have come in the TriNations.
The slump has prompted calls for De Villiers to be replaced now so that a new coach can be found in time for the build up to next year’s World Cup defence.
Hoskins however sees things differently and used the run up to the 2007 Rugby World Cup as a reason not to sack De Villiers.
“Four years ago many people thought the answer was to sack Jake White and we resisted those calls. Four years on and we have to review all our options once more.” said the South African Rugby Union (SARU) president.
“A few years ago SA rugby was lambasted for changing coaches too frequently and throwing players away.” he said in a weekly newsletter.
“Now we have consistency we have to guard against it becoming a tyrant in our selections.” he said 10 days before he will come face-to-face with the national coach in a routine mid-season review.
Apart from the Springboks drop in performance on the field De Villiers is also in hot water following yet another of his wild comments.
In the latest slip up De Villiers said, the Springboks were, “100per cent” behind Bees Roux – the Bulls rugby player arrested and charged with the alleged killing of Pretoria policeman Ntshimane Mogale.
“This is a subject we have raised with the coach and both he and I have written to the family of Mr Mogale to express our personal condolences.” responded Hoskins.
“However, a perception was created and we have addressed this issue with the coach and are discussing remedies with him.
“He has previously been called to account for his comments and the subject will again form part of his review.”
Hoskins denied that De Villiers was being treated differently from previous Springbok coaches after past Bok coaches have been sacked for media offences when De Villiers has “brought the entire South Africa nation into an embarrassed world view” as one fan put it.
“There is consistency (with treatment of De Villiers). The coach was reviewed at the end of the 2008 and 2009 Tri Nations and is being reviewed once again.
“He is being treated no differently to his predecessor who was also reviewed at the end of some indifferent Tri Nations campaigns.”
Hmmmm, so we know what the outcome of the review will be already… no surprises.
“Four years ago many people thought the answer was to sack Jake White and we resisted those calls.
Like i said back then when Jake was not sacked , this will now be the criteria. Every coach that follows will with our overall Rugby depth have a win ratio between 60-70%. And for me that is not good enough, we deserve 75% plus.
This is why i still have no respect for Jake , he threw tests and i was always against it.

If they can not get to 60% winning ratio they must be dragged out and hung in public 😀
