Griquas not a team tobe taken lightly.

This will be an interesting battle to watch….. with Griquas always just bubbling under the surface of the top 5 or 6 Teams…

Chaka Willemse, coach of the Leopards, last night at the aftermatch press interviews highlighted the conundrum that the teams below No 6 on the Currie Cup Premier Division Log is faced with…. he says the following:

    1. If you do not make it to be in the TOP SIX, it means you have to play Promotion / Relegation matches to stay or exit the Premier Division. This means you cannot easily contract players near the end of a season because which players or upcoming players from a TOP 8 Union wants to sign for a Union which might not play in the Premier Division next season? That is one hell of a hamper to a team!

    2. When prompted what his vision is for the Leopards, he said the most important part is to let the players believe that if they can be competative for the 1st 20 minutes, then they can be competative for the next 20 minutes and for the next 20 and for the last 20… a game like last night’s game goes a long way in helping towards that.

    3. When asked how he intends coaching from hereon in, he was surprisingly fresh and deliberate as well as liberating in his explanation. He said that when he became coach at the Leopards, he wrote down a number of things he wanted and still wants to achieve… and he still reads those notes every day. He says he does not mould his style of coaching on one of the greats like Heyneke Meyer or any of the others, he wants to be a good coach in his own right, not a Heyneke clone. He likes an all round game but he says he likes a “speedy” type of game. Important factors are not only to create opportunities, which the Leopards certainly did last night, but to keep on improving the percentage success ratio of converting those opportunities into completed points.

    4. He was frank with us and honest… a decent guy and a stand-up example to his players and Union.

You might ask me, what has Chaka and the Leopards got to do with this afternoon’s game? Well Griquas is in much the same boat, with less resources than their bigger brother Unions…. but with one very large advantage over the Leopards… and that is that they constantly make the TOP SIX, which enables them to contract much better…. as we clearly see with the stars they have developed (Bjorn Basson, Riaan Viljoen, Sarel Pretorius.. ect) and with the possible stars they are able to purchase (Mathew Rosslee, Rocco Janzen).

Here’s hoping that the Griquas can make the semi’s… it will be good for them and for rugby in SA… and in the same breath, Gooooooooo Leopards, last night’s discussion was an eye-opener!
