The Springboks have made two changes to their starting line-up for the Vodacom Tri-Nations Test against Australia at Loftus Versfeld in Pretoria on Saturday.

sarugby

Both changes are amongst the backs, with Jaque Fourie returning from suspension to partner Jean de Villiers in midfield and Frans Steyn starting at fullback in the place of Gio Aplon.

Juan de Jongh, who played at outside centre in the 22-29 loss against the All Blacks last week, moves to the bench, replacing Wynand Olivier. Aplon falls out of the match 22.

There is one change amongst the reserves with Ryan Kankowski, who joined the squad on Monday, preferred as loose forward cover ahead of Francois Louw.

Steyn last played a Test against Wales in Cardiff on 5 June and rejoined the squad this week after being unavailable for the All Blacks Test. Fourie, meanwhile, returns from a four-week suspension after he was yellow-carded in the opening minutes of the previous clash with the Wallabies in Brisbane last month.

Kankowski looked sharp for the Sharks in their win over Western Province in the ABSA Currie Cup last weekend.

De Jongh gave a good account of himself last weekend and is a great asset on the bench.

Victor Matfield has been selected at lock and will play in his 100th Test for the Boks in front of his home crowd at Loftus Versfeld.

The Springbok team is:

15 Frans Steyn, 14 JP Pietersen, 13 Jaque Fourie, 12 Jean de Villiers, 11 Bryan Habana, 10 Morné Steyn, 9 Francois Hougaard, 8 Pierre Spies, 7 Juan Smith, 6 Schalk Burger, 5 Victor Matfield, 4 Flip van der Merwe, 3 Jannie du Plessis, 2 John Smit (capt), 1 Gurthrö Steenkamp.

  • 2

    Not impressed at all.

    Cant we find better than
    Habana
    Januarie
    Butch James

  • 3

Well all you Frans Steyn disciples lets see what your boytjie can offer more than Gio or Zane. Ball in his court now.

  • 5

    @ superBul:
    Bjorn Basson of Mvovu?
    Pretorius of Vermaak?
    JLP of Lambie?

  • 6

Fransie straight back in the team. Might be off the pace and not altitude conditioned but that is PdV fault for not sticking with him from the Wales game.

Why Habs? Should have had Aplon. Spies too not playing well would have had him on the bench and Kanko to start. Morne too not playing well, cost us on Saturday with all those kicks just kicking back up infield and letting em come straight back and run at us all game long. Put huge pressure on the team by making em tackle their butts off. The reason we were dead on our feet in the last 15min.

Would just have thrown Butch in and tired him.

Springbok and Cheetahs flank Heinrich Brüssow will undergo follow-up surgery to his knee which will delay his return to playing.

  • 8

    @ KingPaul:
Enigeen van daai sal die ding doen.

  • 9

@ superBul:4 – Super, Zane offers nothing. Now is not the time to judge Fransie. This is altitude and he has no conditioning for that and the pace will be very fast. HE should have been left to play for the Boks from the Wales game. By now he would have been up to speed and I tell you he would have kicked the damn ball way over the FNB stadium. Not damn straight back up infield to the ABs just waiting to run straight back at us. We needed to get plenty more lineouts on Saturday the more we have the better we get at it and would no doubt started to take some from them. Frans would have made sure of that. He now probably off the pace. So now is not the time to judge him.

Habs was useless too. Not sure what has happened to such a great player. He too was out of position plenty and cost us that try with McCaw by leaving a huge gap open.

Anyhow I would have kept Aplon and not Habs for this game.

  • 10

@ Puma:6 – meant tried on the last line there.

  • 11

    @ KingPaul:
    Mvovu is a stronger runner
Pretorius, Vermaak is too old to start thinking about him now, a shame really
JLP I doern’t like him – Lambie give him a little more time, but most definitely

  • 12

@ KingPaul:3 – KingPaul, Aplon played well on Saturday and should have taken Habs spot this week. Terrible that really. Thought Aplon would have played on the wing instead of Habs.

I Hope that Hougie and Flip takes their Magnesium tablets this week, to aviod cramping again…. would’nt want to see Januarie on the field at all.

As far as Fransie is concerned… let’s see if he does better than in the Wales Test… and if all these Fransie-groupies (read Tjarks supporters) were correct and he steers us to the promissed land.

Choices still suspect… Chiliboy, CJ, Kanko, Butch and Januarie on the bench and Spies, Habana & Fransie in the team.

I do not grasp the facination with Butch or Chiliboy or Januarie… I just do not get it…..

Let me farkoff to Pretoria before I become rude and obnoxcious….

  • 14

    @ Puma:
I get so pissed off, are you just as mad as Dick Muir to tell me not to judge him now. If this is not the time to judge him what the hell is he doing in that team. He had his 15 match apprenticeship with Jake.

  • 15

    14@ superBul:
Of course he must be judged NOW… he’s been selected in the Bokke starting 15…..

    There are no free passes….

Lambie darem nog baie jonk, laat hom eers S15 speel.

  • 17

    @ KingPaul:
Ek persoonlik dink dat Peter Grant selfs in die Super 14, beter was as Morne Steyn.

    Sorry GBS

  • 18

  • 19

    16@ KingPaul:

So ook JS.

Pity Aplon is not in, as said before on this thread, would have preferred him to Habana (needs a rest big time). Good to see Judas and De villiers back together. Why drop Flow out of the 22 altogether? No balance in the loose. It has been said elsewhere, that a good ploy would be to start Burger at 8 with Flow and Smith as flankers.

Frans Steyn is great, because of his huge kicks. He can go for a drop from 60m out, as well as penalties. He also tackles well, and is a huge presence on the field.

Wish Januarie would be dropped and one the other great no 9’s called up to the bench. At the moment we have 14 no 9’s that are better than him, and I am a Januarie fan.

BTW Habana is another player in the long list of players who went downhill since playing for WP/Stormers.

  • 22

    17@ biltongbek:

  • 26

    @ KingPaul:
    hehe

  • 27

    @ grootblousmile:
GBS ek wil nou nie my mond verby praat nie, maar was Peter Grant nie meer akkuraat pale toe as Morne nie?

  • 28

Well, at least PdV is consistently stupid.

What the hell Habana and Spies are doing in the run-on team I don’t know.

PdV now won 5 from last 11, and at the rate he is going is going to become worse.

Boks going down again Saturday I’m afraid.

PdV and his 2 co-clowns are missing all the tricks and at this rate they’ll be lucky to see a semi next year.

  • 29

    27@ biltongbek:

  • 30

@ superBul:14 – Well then you judge him Super. Why not judge Morne Steyn first. He cost us. Need another flyhalf while FdP is out. BUT I can tell you will Fransie at the Back Morne Steyn will play better this week.

Your favourite players are not mine and mine are not yours. So let us just leave it there.

I do make sense you can’t judge a player but only one game in the Tri-Nations. Have to have a few there.
