“Sasol have been the main Springbok sponsors for the past six years and we have both taken huge value out of the relationship, and not just in financial terms,” said Oregan Hoskins, president of the South African Rugby Union.
“We’re sorry to be losing them but we understand their reasons and we’re now looking forward to forging a new relationship between the Springboks, South African rugby and another leading brand.”
Sasol entered into a six-year R150m deal with SARU at the end of 2004 to cover the Springboks, Springbok Sevens, SA ‘A’ and SA Under-20 teams.
“We’re very proud of our association with the Springboks and had certainly hoped our significantly increased offer would have found traction with the union”, said Sasol senior group executive, Lean Strauss.
“In the course of our association with the Springboks, we have seen the game extend across racial and cultural barriers. It has promoted nation building, united our staff around the world and has strengthened our brand both locally and abroad.”
During Sasol’s sponsorship the Springboks won the Rugby World Cup, Vodacom Tri-Nations and a series against the British & Irish Lions. The Springbok Sevens team also claimed the IRB World Series.
Interest in rugby continued to increase during their sponsorship with figures released in BMI’s Adult Sporttrack Report at the end of 2009 showing that rugby continued to outpace both soccer and cricket in terms of growing interest for a fifth year running.
SARU expects to announce the identity of a new sponsor in due course.
“We’re very proud of our association with the Springboks and had certainly hoped our significantly increased offer would have found traction with the union”, said Sasol senior group executive, Lean Strauss.
Looks like the Boks want substantially more than R150 mil…they should get it from an overseas brand in Dollars or Euro’s or £ which currency will substantially increase in value against the Rand now that the world cup is over. R150 mil is cheap for the World Champs!!! John Terry earns R120 mil a year and he is one player for one football club and on top of that he still gets sponsorship deals….the IRU must get their act together.
Geez…the Euro is kicking crap out of every other currency….good opportunity to sell it short!
@ 4man:1
4man, Agree we need a overseas sponsor. Now that would be worth something. Especially in Euros. BUT please don’t have the damn logo so massive across the jersey that all you see is that. I absolutely hate the SASOL splashed right across the Bok Jersey.
Interesting…. wonder who’ll take up the mantle?
@ Puma:Well at the time (I think it was Castle) I didnt want to see any ads on the sacred jersey…but alas the professional era is upon us, so what the hell, we still ahve the same Saffa skin and we are as passionate as ever.
I always wondered what value SASOL got out of such a big sponsorship…. I can understand if it is Castle, driving us to drink copious amounts of beer when we win or lose…. hell maybe they should give Klipdrift a go…. hehehehe
@ grootblousmile:its to get people to buy their shares, they have refineries in Qatar these days too…I think I remember saying to you about 3 years ago….buy lots of SASOL shares and stick them into a safe and preserve them for your children and even grandchildren.
Its all about brand recognition (you know about this anyway) SAB is the 2nd biggest brewer in the world today, their biggest seller is Millers in the USA and the 2nd biggest is CAstle and not just in SA but throughout Africa.
Good shares to buy in a recession…tobacco and alcohol, they always appreciate.
wens iemand wil my met 150 mil sponser
8@ smallies72:
Zim Dollars, no problem…. hahahaha
@ smallies72:Small change mate….if you can raise a 20% deposit you should buy a house in the UK now (london and surrounds) and rent it out before the Rand drops again. Get your foot through the door, while the £ and $ are weak, it wont last forever. Guys with Euro’s are pouring money into property in the UK right now.
Ek wens Klipdrift wil my sponsor!!
@ grootblousmile:
gee maar in pula
@ 4man:pel working for the goverment means i can’t even get a 20%dep together fot a house in sa 😉
11@ KingPaul:
Hehehehe, dink jy sal ‘n goeie rolmodel wees vir hulle produk!
@ smallies72:Eish…jammer maat ek kan nie help nie. Go out on your own and work for the government anyway, with VAT they take over 60% tax from you anyway. But working foryourself you can squirrel away expenses…ask GBS.
I had a amte who retired and they were killing him for tax, he came and worked for my company, he did very little and didnt get paid anything, but he claimed all his travel as expenses….perfectly legal…he even managed to do a couple of property deals in time. The reason I left SA “taxation without representation” the same reason as the Utlanders all those years ago 😉 So I agree….drink Klipdrift en coke, maar vir my is daardie goed van dooshare en bakstene gemaak, want ek wil net naai en baklei as ek die goed drink.
@ KingPaul:Paul…dis die rede lelike mesies kom ook reg….dis die ouens wat Klipdrift drink!! 😉
OK enough frvolity now…lets stick to rugby….oh I forgot with OUR coaches that is also frivolity!
I don’t drink Klippies at all, not even a sip….. BADDDDDDDDDDD experience in April 1988… hehehe
@ grootblousmile:Must say I prefer Limosin (k….taxi), but tend to stay away from it. A lekker single malt or light red wine these days…Pinotage, Merlot and sometimes even mixed.
I’m out for now
19@ 4man:
Cheers.
Hands up who needs viagra!! 😆
GBS Tell ‘Eric’ to push off!! What happened to Rugby Talks security?
