Wellington – South Africa lock Bakkies Botha will miss the rest of the Tri-Nations after being suspended for nine weeks for headbutting All Black scrumhalf Jimmy Cowan.
Botha was suspended by SANZAR judicial officer Dennis Wheelahan on Sunday after a hearing in Auckland. He is not eligible to play again until after September 4, the same date as South Africa’s final Tri-Nations match against Australia.
Botha had been cited after the All Blacks beat South Africa 32-12 in the opening match of the Tri-Nations at Eden Park on Saturday.
Irish referee Alan Lewis missed the incident which happened in a tackle after Cowan had tugged at Botha’s jersey as both were chasing a loose ball.
One wonders when Bakkies Botha will understand the difference between aggression and dirty play? Also he has let the Bok team down and that has been something he has done a lot the last couple of years.
SANZAR, the competition’s ruling body, said Wheelahan had deemed the offence to be in the middle range of seriousness, but had also considered the South African’s record of past offences when deciding the punishment.
Yesterday was probably the most stupid thing I have ever seen on a rugby field.. WTF was he thinking????? He is slowly but surely pissing his career up the wall, what goes through his mind to keep doing this? What a waste of talent..
hi winnie , i have to agree
the man has a brainfart in every game
Not sure he has a brain.
Hi Sharky,a player of his nature will land himself in hot water every now and then but every game like he is doing currently is ridiculous..
If i was PDV, Bakkies would not play for the bokke again. We where lucky to play the test with 15 players.
Bakkies still has a role to play in Springbok rugby. Don’t write him off. We still need him. He’ll be back. Look how Schalk was crucified after the eye gouging incident. He’s back and playing better than before. Bakkies owned up and apologized to everyone, respect.
Rugby has gone a bit soft. 10 years ago this would have been nothing.
“Springbok lock Bakkies Botha has expressed remorse after being suspended for nine weeks for an incident of foul play in the Vodacom Tri-Nations Test against New Zealand in Auckland on Saturday.
Botha appeared before a Sanzar Judicial hearing in Auckland on Sunday morning after being cited for striking All Black scrumhalf Jimmy Cowan with the head following a tackle in the opening minute of the Test match.
Botha said he was devastated but accepted he had acted outside the Laws of the Game, following his lengthy suspension, “I sincerely regret the incident,” Botha said. “I have let my team, my country and family down and I have done an injustice to the Springbok jersey and what is stands for.
“I apologise to Jimmy Cowan and the New Zealand rugby public for what happened. Rugby is a physical sport but it has to be played within the boundaries and spirit of the law. I truly regret my actions and will make sure I put the extended time away from the game to positive use and return to playing with the right attitude”.
Saru’s Manager of National Teams, Andy Marinos, expressed the organisation’s disappointment.
“Saru views any incident of foul play in a very serious light.
Bakkies remains an important player in Springbok rugby and I have discussed with him the extent of his actions and the implications it could have on the team, himself personally and his family,” Marinos said.
Botha has been suspended from all rugby up to and including September 4th and will return to South Africa on Monday”
I say
Send him on a anger management course like Cricket did to Gibbs. Even let him pay for it. But dont chase him out of the game.
Bakkies is a dirty coward. He did not have the guts to take Cowan on face to face. Only cowards hit from behind.
No respect, none at all.
rugbybal, don’t know why you respect Botha, he is a hooligan, no place for him anymore.
@ Loosehead:
Eish hahaha 😀
Ag Loosehead and Boerboel, everyone make mistakes, he owned up to it and apologised therefore respect. Read my post properly. You too Ballies should grow up. Bakkies will be back, mark my words, and I can’t wait to tell you…I told you so.
Bakkies actually deserves more than a 9 weeks ban….
If I was Bokke coach I would send Bakkies back to his Union with a clear message that he won’t be selected for the Bokke this year at all… he would have to go redeem himself with perfectly diciplined games before being eligible for Bokke selection.
Bakkies has apologised, fair enough…. but he has cheapened and villified the Bokke jersey enough now!
Regarding the rest of the team… I hope they got a tongue-lashing for allowing the All Blacks to dominate every aspect of the game on Saturday….. they better show some bloody balls and gust this coming weekend, I was very disapointed in them.
ok guys, my 2c worth
…
as one of the bloggers said above, schalk were in the same position last year after the lions test series
and he cleaned up his game!
he went from someone who (like bakkies nowadays) were yellowcarded consistently to not receiving a single yellow ever since!!
yes bakkies were stupid … he didnt think, and he’s paying the price for it!!
i for one am hoping to see him back in the green and gold
having cleaned up his act
and back to his best!!
until then,
well lets see who puts his hand up for that vacant spot!!
must say as a big bakkies fan i am sadened by his stupidity and can only hope he can pull himself together
i have to agree with rudi’s sentiments and do whats needed
the bok jersey should never be soiled by this kind of rubbish
good morning all
hope you all had a good weekend
helloooooooooooo sharky!!

Hello… hell I feel like I was kicked in the kidneys…. the 2 parties this weekend did me no good… and for someone who usually drinks very modestly, I really feel like a washed rag today!
Rugbybal #12, I think it is uncalled for that you call Loosehead and me ballies that have to grow up, I think it is bad taste and do not belong on this site.
@ Boerboel:
Jammer oom Boerboel en oom Loosehead
Just to set the record straight: I don’t condone the behaviour of Bakkies. All I’m saying is that he asked for our forgiveness and lets give it to him. He’s a talented rugby player and can be instrumental in the WC if he cleans up his act.
@ rugbybal:
Don’t you blerrie call me Oom!
Bakkies is a dirty coward.
24@ Loosehead:
Hello Oom!
