“I’m certain all rugby fans would send Brendan Cannon their support and best wishes at such a difficult time. An terrible accident, exactly the same as that which Phil Kearns experienced five years ago”  – Old Griqua

AUSTRALIAN rugby union great Brendan Cannon’s 15-month-old son is stable and expected to make a full recovery after the former Wallaby accidentally backed over him in the driveway of their Brisbane home.

The grandfather of injured toddler Samuel Cannon said the boy would recover from the accident, which occurred yesterday.

“He’s been kept immobilized, he’s been kept unconscious, but they’re about to wake him up,” said Bill Purcell, the father of Samuel’s mother, Fiona.

“He looks pretty good actually. He’s a strong, tough little fella. He is expected to survive now. I understand that they think he will make a full recovery.”

Samuel was taken to the Royal Children’s Hospital with two fractured femurs, a broken pelvis and internal injuries after he was run over by the family’s four-wheel drive vehicle, driven by his father.

Doctors said it was a “miracle” that Samuel survived.

Cannon – who played 42 Tests for Australia and 106 Super 12 games for Queensland, New South Wales and the Western Force – was in shock yesterday.

“It’s one of those worst case scenarios,” he said.

“We’ve got a very narrow driveway, and you need to be focusing on clearing the gate. So I was reversing out, concentrating on the right side of the gate to get out, and I’ve accidentally run over the little guy.”

Samuel was previously playing with his mother in the back garden when, his parents believe, he dashed 33 yards (30 meters) to the car after seeing his siblings Joseph, 5, and Phoebe, 3, getting into the vehicle with their father.

Samuel then ended up in the path of the car.

Another ex-Wallaby, former Australian captain Phil Kearns, was involved in a similar heartbreaking accident in 2006 when he ran over his baby daughter Andie in the driveway of his Sydney home.

Andie, then 19 months, suffered severe liver damage and abdominal injuries after Kearns backed over her.

Brisbane – Australia hooker Brendan Cannon’s baby son was slowly improving on Monday after the ex-international accidentally reversed over him in the family four-wheel drive.

Fifteen-month-old Samuel remained in intensive care but was downgraded from critical to stable condition after the accident, which left him with two broken legs and serious internal injuries, his family said in a statement on Monday.

“We know he is in the best place possible to recover,” his parents said on Sunday. “Given the circumstances, this is obviously an extremely trying time for our family.”

I’m sure Brendan and his family are grateful for the messages of support from the rugby fraternity. I have passed on to Brendan via email our best wishes for Samuel’s speedy and healthy recovery from all at Rugby-Talk. I’m certain that will mean a lot to the family.
