Steyn confirmed on Friday that he had extended his contract with the Blue Bulls Company till October 2013.
The fly half, who broke the Super 14 record for points in a season in 2010 by scoring 263, is already the all time South African points scorer in Super rugby (757),
Steyn said he had no reason to leave.
“It is going very well here and there is no reason for me to go anywhere else. I am happy in the team, we are playing good rugby and there are a lot of quality youngsters coming through the ranks. It all bodes well for Bulls rugby and I want to remain part of it.”
He admitted that he had received offers to play overseas, but said he had not been tempted.
“I realised during the Springbok tour to Europe last year that I am not very keen to play rugby there. Speaking to players who are there at the moment and who came back made me realise that the grass is not necessarily greener on the other side.”
He hoped his continued contribution would help the Bulls to stay on top
“We will be losing some experience and quality when guys like Fourie (Du Preez) leaves after 2011 and someone like Victor (Matfield) is likely to retire. It is very important that some senior players stay here to keep the ship going in the right direction. I would like to be one of them and give some guidance to the younger ones in the process,” Steyn said.
Bulls coach Frans Ludeke said he was pleased with the loyalty showed by Steyn.
“Morné’s decision will have a massive impact on the whole union. He is a world class player and to hear that he wants to stay and continue to help build what we believe could be special, is remarkable. He will be an important cog in the future and the success of our team.”
Another positive Bulls story. Thank you Morne, we will shout even harder for you next year.
Not a big suprise, dont see this chap leaving the Bulls.
@ Winston:
Still the right way to communicate it with the fans. This message is keeping a few others from flying away, it is great to be part of a success story.
Now look at the secrecy in the Lions camp.Only rumors. Their loyal supporters are feeling edgy. They want news.
Thats a true story Super, plus guys actually want to stay at the Bulls,I think the whole family enviroment has alot to do with it.
