The SA Under-20s will be focused on booking their place in a first ever IRB Junior World Championship final when they take on the Baby Blacks in the second semi-final on Thursday which will be played in Rosario at 21:30 SA time.

New Zealand are the reigning Under-20 champions and recorded their second title in Japan last year following their 44-28 victory over England. They won the 2008 World Championship in Wales. The Baby Boks on the other hand conceded two semi-final defeats in those tournaments, both against England.

“A South African side has never played in an Under-20 World Championship final and that should be enough motivation for the boys,” said SA Under-20 vice-captain and scrumhalf Louis Schreuder.

“The guys were disappointed with the defeat against Australia, but we’re a close group of guys who believe we can turn things around in the semi-finals.

“It’s going to be a huge game on Thursday, as New Zealand ended the Pool phase of the tournament as the leading team in the competition. With that in mind, we don’t need any further reminding of how big this game is going to be.

“New Zealand are a classy side, but we going to focus on our things and how we want to play the game. We were guilty of making a couple of errors in the Australia game, but our intentions are to play and to stick to our systems and structures that successfully saw us defeat Scotland (73-0) and Tonga (40-14).”

The Baby Boks arrived in the Argentinean city of Rosario on Monday evening and will start their on-field training for Thursday’s semi-final on Tuesday. South Africa lost 42-35 to Australia in their final Pool C game in Sante Fe on Sunday.

Only SA Under-20 captain CJ Stander, Sampie Mastriet and Kene Okafor have previously competed in an IRB Junior World Championship semi-final. All three players though were part of the Baby Boks’ 41-20 defeat to England in Tokyo last year. In that particular game, Stander was one of South Africa’s try-scorers.

“This is definitely the biggest game I have ever been involved in and I am seriously looking forward to the challenge of playing against New Zealand. It’s a big game for us.” said Schreuder.

“As a rugby player, you want to test yourself against the best, and New Zealand must have done a few good things to be in a position of where they are at the moment. But it’s a playoff game and anything could happen on the day.

“We just have to ensure that we cut out those match day mistakes and take our opportunities against the Baby Blacks. There won’t be many, so we’ll have to be sharp and ready when they avail themselves.”

The SA Under-20 team to play the Baby Blacks will be named later.

If we score a converted try early in the 2nd half then it is still game on… otherwise, it’s good night nurse

The way past these NZ outjies is through and past their flyhalf and inside centre

  • 125

Watch us come back only to blow it in the end like we did against Australia

  • 126

Our under 20’s is not so mature as the Aussies. Dont know why but they get their young trough faster.

  • 127

doesnt that 22/7 bring back memories?

Kom Lambie, kick this penalty… too far, so he goes for touch

Well Bafana are out of the wc unless they do something out of this world and score 6/zip to France in their pool game. Which I doubt. We would also then want Mexico win their last game by a big margin. Not sure if that will happen. Think France and SA are out after the pool games.

Now hope our baby Boks get a wake up call and start to play better here too. Ab’s have dominated us here for sure.

Super, Think they have too. As they need their young for their senior side. We have so much depth in our senior side, that we not really worried about how well our youngsters are doing here right now.

Not the right way to go but think that is what is happening here.

Our U/18 (Schools) Rugby is very strong, so too our seniors….. but there seems to be a gap when our boys leave school where some fall by the wayside

Super, I knew it too, only thought just maybe we could make the 2nd round. Never thought we would go past that but was hoping like crazy. Pity we lost so bad last night. If it was a 1/0 loss we might still have had some hope. A real pity.

I do think for the next world cup we need to get a coach that will stay with the team for 4 years. Not chop and change that never ever helps. I listened to Neil Tovey tonight and he made a lot of sense. Not that I knew much but could understand why we lost so bad last night. This Brazil coach has us playing a crazy game for what we are up to really. We need someone like Neil Tovey in the coaching set up. Also only merit selection. In soccer too. Where is Booth? Heard he was a great player. Unless he is injured.

Selection in any sport is key. Always.

Will be make a next World Cup in the Soccer with our history and World Ranking?

    I doubt it.

@ grootblousmile:131 – Out jolling? Some do that after school no matter how much talent they have and how much they want to continue to play. Not all of course but a lot do that.

Young I suppose you can understand, but they have wasted a great future. Probably never to be seen again playing rugby. A real waste of talent.

gbs, What ever happened after 1996? We had so much talent then. Remember us playing a friendly against England and getting a draw there right in England. Not many do.

So what has gone wrong since then? That is a worry. I think too much interference who ever is running soccer in this country.

WE getting a huge smack here. Why? Is this team selected on merit? At this level we should be right up there with the best. Not getting a klap like this.

Gbs, I really hope so. The next one is in Brazil. Soccer crazy country. Should be a smasher of a world cup there too. Great vibes with their drums and all. Hope we make it.

Need to start right now after this dreadful wc. Need a coach for 4 years in place that knows our culture and our game and our players. Don’t think a overseas coach works for us really.

  • 145

Puma do you want that Lions feeling, hoping for 4 years that Bafana get their act together?

  • 146

    144@ Puma:
Is it our coach which is the problem??

I don’t know, know too little about soccer but somehow I doubt it.

  • 147

Think like our soccer team this is cup is over for our Baby Boks. Pity we normally have a really good u21’s as it used to be now u20’s. What has happened?

I tell you we need the best coaches always. The best selected players everytime. Always selecte on merit no matter what. From this is where we build for our future Boks.
